As officially announced by the Twins, Cruz and minor league righty Calvin Faucher will head to Tampa, while Minnesota will pick up right-handers Joe Ryan and Drew Strotman. ESPN.com’s Jeff Passan (Twitter link) was the first to report that the Rays were acquiring Cruz, while Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (Twitter links) was the first to report that it was a four-player deal also involving Stotman.

I think Kimbrel will be the only player moved, with maybe Davies and Tepera as well. Ricketts will insist on keeping as many fannies in the seats as possible for the rest of the year, and there doesn't appear to be enough value in the others to make a trade worthwhile.

The teams still in the playoff race face two challenges beyond finances and all that shit:

1. The 2nd wild card means that if you don't win your division, you could be renting guys for a one game playoff. That's deflating prices.
2. There is no more August 31 waiver trade deadline. In the past, a rental like Rizzo could easily be acquired as late as August 31 if they had a big enough contract to clear waivers. That's inflating prices.

I think they're in. Still got 2-1/2 days. But In my view, the WC game isn't the playoffs. It's a play-in game for the playoffs. You don't let a play-in game dictate what a trade should be. If you feel you're stealing lunch money dealing your best reliever, you do it, despite a play-in game.
