Can Vlad pitch? Or just play some old dusty position on flat land?

Agreed. Though I can see a push to make sure Ohtani wins MVP and Cy Young.

I'm okay with MVP, but if Ohtani wins the Cy Young, someone needs to be shot.

the sox made winning while down an entire starting OF look too easy. Their success is remarkable under the circumstances and you have to look at Larussa as being a significant cause

Hinch has the worst roster in mlb and has them at respectability range. Rays have half the payroll of the White Sox and have a better record in the best division in baseball..the Sox are beating up on the worst division in baseball.

Rays did what they were supposed to do.

Tigers are fine and in 3rd place.

Sox will win 90 games (after being projected to win 80 at the start of the season) while having 3 key pieces of the team miss significant portions of the season.

It will be so. But it seems to me the Rays organization is the best out there. Defense, pitching, putting the ball in play. I said Hinch to dig under peoples' skin, but it's Kevin Cash. Hinch has the same problem LaRussa does. Piss poor competition.

Isn't it suspect that the worst record in the playoffs from the worst division would be MOY?

Fangraphs had them 87. DraftKings at 91.

I know.

The jerks at Baseball Prospectus were the ones at 81.

Sox are a .500 team since they got exposed by Houston in the middle of June. I say exposed because this is what I see. I find it curious Detroit being shown little respect, when in fact, at this point, they just might be better. Since the middle of June, they are the best team in the AL Central. And now for years, we have to reckon with AJ Hinch, who Hahn was set to hire and was overruled due to the buddy system.

I was on team Hinch for the Sox.

Sure the future might be tough.

And maybe Hinch does what LaRussa does this year. Or even better. Who knows.

But this year, for what actually happened, LaRussa is the manager of the year for me.

Every year some dog ass team gets hot after they have been out of contention. It's easy to play with no pressure.

Sox, at full strength, are still 5+ games better than what the Tigers could hope to trot out there next year, even with upgrades. I would still say the Twins are the team to watch next year.

Well when they start crowning division champs based on arbitrary start and stop points during the season, let me know.

They had a higher win % under Ricky last season. LaRussa was along for the ride IMO. If they make it to the WS then I'll admit I was wrong, but I don't think he's done anything special and is being credited with the teams success based in large part on his reputation.

Note: I'll admit that I wasn't a fan when they hired him and I'm still not, but it has NOTHING to do with his perceived politics.

For me its the fact that they survived with as many key injuries as they had.

Of course if they lose in the first round again, I'll be calling for Tony's scalp. :D

Of course there's truth to that, but again was this due to the Manager or the surprise performances by no-name subs? I realize the the Manager often gets credit (deserved or not) for that kind of thing but then who gets blame for the tail off the last 3 months when most of the key injured players returned?

They haven't been healthy all year. When the regulars returned, Grandal went down and after that the starting pitching was hurt. It became ridiculous at some point that an OF of Jimenez, Robert and Eaton/Engel, became an OF of Vaughn, Hamilton and Goodwin. Two of those three guys weren't even backups. They were scrap heap.

Every starting fielder but Yoan and Abreu will end up missing more than 25% of the season, and each is All Star level talent.

I fully agree that managers are along for the ride but as long as you are going to give out an award, its pretty relevant that a team so decimated by star player injuries kept itself together. This could have easily been the Padres or Angels type of situation.

Cash is MOY. The Rays have had a shitload of injuries to their bullpen as well as a couple of starters.

What Cash has going for him though is an insane minor league system. Their depth down at Durham is far better than what LaRussa had at Charlotte. Durham is 82-43 this year, and they played and beat the shit out of Charlotte a lot given this year's COVID-unbalanced minor league schedule.

It would be Christmas Day early if Seattle and Toronto get in and the Yankees and Boston are knocked out.

Even better if it's a four team tie and they have to play on Monday to do it.

True....but this gives the Rays General Manager of the year, not necessarily Manager of the Year.

Great argument for LaRussa, but the others mentioned are also worthy.
