I saw the package going back to San Diego, there were certainly a lot of players, but no real standouts. If the Cubs were serious about replacing Bellanger and acquiring Soto, they could have topped it.

Maybe the Cubs really are going to get Ohtani.

I am surprised any big move like this happened before Ohtani made his pick.

It was a smart move by the Yankees. Strike while everyone else is waiting for a response.

Seems dumb on Padres end tho. They could have possibly got more from a team that lost out on Ohtani.

I’m not following closely but are they in on Ohtani?

I meant San Diego. Are they clearing payroll for him?

I haven't heard their name linked to him, but who knows. There can always be a mystery team.

I think Ohtani prefers California.

No top 5 Yankee prospects given up.

Jesse Rodgers told me the Yankees were willing to give up number one prospect Jasson Dominguez for Bellinger.

No. They are overleveraged and have to dump payroll. They will probably dump a bunch more.

The goal wasn't to get prospects it was to get that salary off the books. I suspect Soto's money was the sticking point for the Cubs. Allegedly the Padres just wanted Morel and a couple minor leaguers.

Didn't San Diego need a short-term loan to make payroll last year?

Taking on a $30M salary for one of the best players in baseball shouldn't have been an issue for the Cubs or Sox.

This trade is also very clearly for one year of Soto. Unless the Yankees offer him way more than he can get on the open market, he's going to hit the open market.

I doubt it was his salary, they probably didn't want to part with prospects if they had no chance of extending him. Boras will take him to FA.

This whole thread is about how it didn't take great prospects to get him. Your last sentence is correct. It's a one year rental.

They still should have got more for him even if a rental

Maybe that market just wasn't there for a one-year guy. Most teams aren't trying to win year-by-year. They're looking for a "championship window" of several years.

What is it going to take to bring Soto back after next season? It's safe to say, probably a lot. So now you either have to pay him- the Yankees probably will- or you have to start over with someone else.

Nas had it right above. They couldn't service their debt without a cash call even before the guy died. The partners basically said, "We aren't putting in any more money. If you want to go in your own pocket, go ahead."

The reason he spent so wildly in the first place was because he had already beaten cancer once and he figured, "what the fuck." All he cared about was getting the headlines over the Dodgers. He did okay in that regard for a little bit.

They could probably dump him at the deadline for more than what they paid for him.

His grandfather was an O'Malley. Beating the Dodgers at their own game meant absolutely everything to him.
