I honestly don't have a baseball guy.

Back in the days of my youth, it was Peter Gammons.

Nowadays, it's Jayson Stark

There's just something about Costas that always drove me insane...a level of smarm nearly unseen in national media.

Costas with Darling in the earlier playoff round was a breath of fresh air. You know why? They shut their fucking mouths and did not have to fill every second with mindless blather. The three person booth has made baseball unwatchable.

I actually met him years ago after a Brewers Game of the Week on a Saturday. He was actually very charming. Kubek was a dick.

Maybe a little Wizards Jordan.

I feel like I hit the jackpot for all sports, both locally and nationally, in my youth. His voice told me that the game was important.

Disagree.

His Royals-Yankees call was atrocious. The rare KC highlight was announced with the enthusiasm of a guy putting down his dog while every Yankee play brought him to completion.

I’ll take Al Michaels any day.

Mt Rushmore has Madden and Cosell. I'd think Costas is there, no? To fill it out, I'd have to go with Nas' choice, Tom Brady.

Prolly depends how old you are.

I like Michaels. Marv Albert takes me back to Jordan. Joe Buck has been the big game voice for multiple sports for most of the 21st century. Musburger deserves to be in the conversation.

Praised the greatness of the game not the "great guy" players so much as many national announcers today.

Costas did everything. I think I may have heard him call a boxing match. I never felt like he was out of his depth about anything. You hear the Stephen A's and the McAfee's of the world struggle to give you 30 seconds of content for sports they're not "experts" in.

If we're doing straight play-by-play, then it's Scully, Summerall, Costas, and Michaels

His constant references to dead ball players during his baseball broadcasts can get grating. However, when he plays it straight, he's good. I really liked him as the host of NBC's Olympics coverage, although I don't have any complaints about Tirico either.

Hated Musberger for years on the CBS football package. Thought he was an idiot. Looking back, he was very influential for quite a while.

i believe curt gowdy (nbc) and keith jackson (abc) were the two big shots who did both nfl/mnf, college football and mlb playoffs in the 70s. when gowdy retired, nbc looked past dick enberg and sought out a new king of the hill type and settled on costas. i thought cbs' forte was their pre-game show with brent musberger, not the actual broadcast of the game. when madden joined summerall, then cbs' #1 nfl broadcast team not only surpassed cbs' nfl today pre-game show, but also was tons better than nbc's #1 nfl broadcast team of enberg and olsen.

i remember scully doing nfl, believe he did the bears 1979 playoff game with the eagles.

i thought costas was good. i liked his late night talk show, he was giddy when he had audrey meadows on, talking about his favorite tv show, the honeymooners.

I'm not sure I'd frame it that way. Enberg was still the #1 guy for the AFC, and Vin Scully was #1 for baseball. Costas and Kubek were the B-team, and then I think he also did whatever NBC's version of The NFL Today was.

yes, i don't dispute any of that.

at some point in the early/mid 80's, i believe nbc decided to elevate costas as the network broadcast guru - try and reach a jim mckay type status. costas' 'forte' was baseball, as was enberg's. it was costas and not enberg, who got the call as the sport face of the network. costas did baseball, as you said, nbc nfl pre-game, olympics....eventually, getting his own talk show by the end of the decade.

I respect your Keith Jackson despite his suckage.

Here's the deal, Jack. No, I really mean it. All the grandiosity of Jackson and Scully can be washed down with a glass of sing song. Costas, same grandiosity, just without the sing song.

I love college football and Keith Jackson WAS college football.

Do you remember his late night television talk show? That lasted about the same length as Pat Sajak’s.

Later. It came on after Late Night and it was on until 2001, I think.

I remember one time I tried to watch it in 2001, just out of curiosity, but it had been cancelled and replaced with reruns of SCTV. And that turned out to be great for me because I discovered SCTV! But that was just a stopgap until Carson Daly's replacement show was ready. Fun discovery, though.
