Yeah that rotation would be stacked, with a chance to win the most games in history. In the New York Post, in a Santana story, they stated the Cubs, Mariners, and Rangers were also players in the Santana derby. They didn't say anything about players names being exchanged, just that these 3 teams have been mentioned, along with the 3 he most likely with end up with.

I don't believe for a second that the Cubs were involved in this.

If Boston gets this deal done, who else is in this deal besides Crisp and Lester ?

If I'm Minny, don't you demand the young CF Jacoby Ellsbury instead of Crisp, and SP Clay Buchholz along with Lester and another top prospect ?

Boston with a rotation of 1) Beckett 2) Santana 3) Matsuzaka 4) Schilling 5) Buchholz/Wakefield with Papelbon closing is pretty damn nasty.

The only hope for other teams would be Schilling getting really bad, and the #5 starter struggling, but Buchholz looks like a future star as well.

Clearly, Kenny Williams is going to have to do a lot more to get us back to the WS if that it his goal!

Matsuzaka was beatable most of the second half. I fully expect Schilling to have an ERA over 4.25. Beckett was fantastic, but he is also one season removed from a 5 ERA over an entire season.

I'd be more than happy to have those problems but the Sox are not an automatic division winner.

I still think a Yankee offer of Chamblerlin/Hughes and Melky Cabrerra is better than Crisp and Lester. I know the Yanks say Chamberlin is untouchable, but someon would come to his senses if it came down to either getting or not getting Santana.

Yankees have set a Monday deadline for a trade. Boston has agreed to include Ellsbury in a trade, so this should be interesting.

Santana has a full no trade clause, and has said that he will only waive it for an off season trade to the Yanks or the Red Sox. He also said that he will not accept any mid season trade.
Nothing like a star player jumping in an driving down his own trade value by limiting the market and the timing of his trade.
The Twins have to be pissed he couldn't keep his mouth shut.

I'm not sure there are other teams that can compete with the talent being offered by Boston/New York AND have the money to sign him to an extension.

It will be nice to have Santana out of the AL central but the Sox should concede the division to the Twins for the 2010-15 seasons.

I think the Twins were trying to involve the Dodgers & Angels to bid up the price, and the Mariners had some interest, but he made it known that he will not go to the west coast.

According to the Providence Journal, the Angels have made a late bid for Johan Santana, with Jered Weaver likely involved as bait.

The Red Sox and Twins have yet to resume talking today, though WFAN's Sweeney Murti thinks a deal remains close. ESPN's Peter Gammons indicated that the Twins still aren't certain whether they like the Jacoby Ellsbury or Jon Lester/Coco Crisp package better. Meanwhile, the Yankees have no intention of changing their current offer, a team executive told the Journal News

The Angels are developing a reputation for swooping in at the 11th hour and getting a deal done (see Hunter), but I'm not sure why they're even getting involved after Santana expressed his desire to stay away from the west coast?

I saw the Twins were dangling Nathan as well as Santana to the Red Sox, and yet Sox fans were balking at the price. I know nothing is assured but how could you not feel incredibly confident with Nathan AND Papelbon working the late innings. That is not only a strong series contender, it would be a pitching staff for the ages.

Guessing now the Angels will use all their prospects to get Santana after losing out on Cabera. Earlier today they were reporting a prospect or 2 and Jared Weaver.

It's a two part equation.

Part one is that I love the excitement guys like Ellsbury bring to the game. Guys who always fly out of the batters box even on a groundout, always take the extra base, and can get from 1st to 3rd in a blink. He's the yin to Manny's yang. Historically, the Red Sox haven't had many of those type of players, at least not in my lifetime.
He reminds me a lot of the pre-steroid Lenny Dykstra whom I loved to watch.

Second, I really like Coco, who IMHO, will be a very fine player, but needs to get out of Boston before his confidence is completely crushed. He'll never recover from the playoffs slump if he stays there.
If the Twins get him, he'll give them 90% of the offense and defense that Hunter did and will be a borderline all-star, but won't come close to matching Hunter's leadership.

If Ellsbury has to go in order to get the deal done, I won't be crying too long. The upside would be that I'll get to see more of him in person when he's playing 18 games against the White Sox

If this deal works out for the wrong sox, there are two or three teams that look positively superhuman. Is there even an NL anymore?

God knows I've seen him do that to the White Sox a time or two, excluding the last game I saw him pitch at the Cell where he gave up 4 early runs, but still won.

I just cant see the Mets trading an everyday player like Jose Reyes. I understand they would get Johan F'N Santana in the deal but maybe I am overvaluing Reyes but players like him don't come around very often. You dont just find a 280-300 hitter who will hit 60 extra base hits (~12 HRs), steal 60, have an OBP of 350 and OPS of close to 800 - and plays SS.
