i dont get the outrage i have heard on the airwaves regarding this. does getting fired feel any better during the daytime? they are in new york. it isnt like it was going to slip through the cracks and not get covered regardless of what time of day it happened. the bottom line is he is gone, and it is hardly a surprise.

But you man up and face the media and whatever. At least give the guy that courtesy. It was 3am on the East Coast, and this was like 2 weeks after they had a press conference saying his job was safe.

I agree with Frank, this is a crappy move by the Mets.

Just another reason to hate the Mets.

it isnt like he got fired via email while he was sleeping or anything. he got fired 2 hours after a game on the west coast. hardly unprecedented.

Yeah, ok. Getting fired after a game happens, I'll give you that. But at 3am in your own hometown? Hardly. Mere days after holding a big press conference saying that your manager's job is safe? Never. They can fire thier manager whenever, but they should have done it last September. This was a gutless and classless move by the Mets. Case closed.

minaya never gauranteed randolphs job for the future. he game him support 2 weeks ago, and they sucked since. it was no secret he was getting launched. he wasnt blindsided, he talked about the possibility of getting fired before the game.

i guess the important thing would be if they fired him face-to-face, with reasons laid out. whether it happens at noon or midnight, as long as it was handled appropriately, to his face, what difference does it make? no matter the time of day, there is going to be a media feeding frenzy.

In baseball, the vote of confidence is a kiss of death. This team was WAY below expectations, and anyone who didn't see this coming wasn't paying attention.
I don't see this as classless or gutless, I see it as about 10 months late.

It was only a matter of time before Willie Randolph was going to get fired for the New York Mets' bellyflop, but the way they fired him was absolutely classless! You don't fire anyone in the middle of the night! The firing of Randolph reminds me of Billy Reay, the former Chicago Blackhawks' head coach who was pink slipped IN THE MAIL way back in 1971. Then again, some thought the Bulls were classless in firing head coach Scott Skiles on Christmas Eve.

i am still trying to understand how this is classless. he was fired 2 hours after a game. perhaps after the game they had a long talk with him about the situation, went over the reasons, and fired him. who knows? but just because most people are asleep at that hour doesnt mean it was handled without class.

Why fly him out to the west coast (for a game he won) just to have him and some assistants turn right back around? They obviously made up their mind, but why not do it Sun before the team left?

Seriously, who cares if they made him fly an extra trip to the west coast. He wasn't doing the job and they fired him.

It's one thing to fire Willie Randolph, but the way the New York Mets fired him in THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT was absolutely unprofessional! There's a great deal of finger pointing between the team's owner & General Manager over the way Willie was fired at 3:15a Eastern this morning, less than a few hours after they beat Anaheim in Interleague Play...If I ever lose my job, I NEVER want to lose it AS I'M TRYING TO SLEEP!!! It was a Bush League move in my opinion...

The bottom line is this- Randolph wasn't doing the job and got fired. Period. Who cares what time of day it happens? Should have happened a long time ago.

That being said, I think the fact that the situation turned into a giant clusterfuck says a lot about the Mets organization- that it appears to be in a bad state of disarray right now

Agreed on all points. This post from bagels summerizes the situation well.
