Astros' Boone to have heart surgery, will miss season
Kissimmee, FL (Sports Network) - Houston Astros infielder Aaron Boone announced at a press conference on Wednesday that he will have surgery to correct a heart condition.

Boone will undergo a procedure this week to correct a condition he has had since college that involves the aorta and aortic valve. His situation is not in an emergency state, but an acceleration in his condition was discovered during a routine physical in February.

"Initially, my doctors thought that I could delay the corrective surgery because of some variations in my condition, but they are now advising me to deal with the problem sooner rather than later," Boone said Wednesday.

The 36-year-old added that the recovery time is likely several months, and that he will recuperate enough to play baseball again. However, Boone was not ready to commit to a return on Wednesday.

"Am I going to recover well enough to play baseball again? Probably. Will I play baseball again? Not sure at this time."

Boone was flanked by teammates at the press conference as well as by manager Cecil Cooper and general manager Ed Wade and said the support he has received from his teammates "has been very special."

"We want Aaron to know that we are standing behind him," Wade said. "He's not alone in this. The Boones are one of baseball's first families, and we want Aaron to know that we're here for him."

Boone signed a one-year deal with Houston after spending last season with Washington. He batted .241 with six home runs and 28 runs batted in through 104 games. Boone played primarily first base for the Nationals, but also saw time at third and second.

In 11 MLB seasons, Boone owns a lifetime .264 average with 126 homers and 555 RBI in 1,142 games with the Reds, Yankees, Indians, Marlins and Nationals.
