FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. (SI.com) -- The wife of Scott Schoeneweis, a pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks, was found dead Wednesday at her home in suburban Phoenix, police said.

Maricopa County sheriff's deputies were called to the home after Gabrielle Dawn Schoeneweis, 39, was discovered on the floor of the master bedroom by the couple's 14-year-old daughter, one of their four children, authorities said.

Deputies said the woman was unresponsive when they arrived at 12:11 MST and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of death is still under investigation, but a spokesman for the sheriff's department said there were no initial signs of foul play.

Scott Schoeneweis was on his way back to Arizona from Miami, Fla., where the Diamondbacks were playing a series with the Florida Marlins, said team president Derrick Hall.

"Words cannot describe how shocked and saddened we are this evening," Hall said in a statement. "This is a tragedy for the Schoeneweis family who we naturally consider members of our family. We are here to support Scott in any way during this traumatic period in his life."

Schoeneweis, a 35-year-old left-handed relief pitcher in his 11th major league season, has a career record of 45-55 and a 4.89 ERA with six teams. This season, he is 0-0 with a 2.54 ERA in 19 games.

Schoeneweis came to the Diamondbacks last December in a deal with the New York Mets, who agreed to pay $1.6 million of his $3.6 million salary for 2009.

Schoeneweis, a survivor of testicular cancer, and his wife celebrated their 10th anniversary in January. They had three children together, and she already had a daughter when they were married.
