Big Unit has retired.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Randy Johnson is retiring after 22 major league seasons.

The Big Unit, an overpowering lefty who last June became the 24th pitcher in big league history to win 300 games, made the expected announcement Tuesday on a conference call.

A five-time Cy Young Award winner, the 46-year-old Johnson accomplished just about everything in his remarkable career that a player hopes for in baseball.

He owns a World Series ring and co-MVP honors, and was a 10-time All-Star. He threw two no-hitters, including a perfect game, and ranks second on the career strikeout list.

The 6-foot-10 Johnson finishes with a career record of 303-166 and 4,875 strikeouts in 4,135 1/3 innings.

RJ had an incredible career and was the most feared pitcher of his time. His time in Arizona was one of if not the most dominating years in baseball history. He was one of my favorites and I loved watching him pitch. Tomorrow will be a sad day. Next stop Cooperstown.

I think Randy "Big Unit" Johnson will eventually be Cooperstown-bound as well. I tend to think he'll sport an Arizona Diamondbacks' cap when he does get the phone call from the BBWAA in 5 years or so. I think Randy's best work over the years came when the D-Backs seemed to have a different uniform for every day of the week when they first started playing...

A face that could scare children and a fastball that could scare batters.

I never realized Randy's W-L record was that good! He should have stuck around for that 5000th strikeout, though.

Kruk turning his batting helmet around and batting right handed against Johnson was priceless. Yeah, he's a first ballot guy and one of the best of his generation.
