Before this year, I would have said the best...

You think he's better than Frank? If he isn't cheating he'll decline like Frank and when his career is over they should look about the same. For me, I wouldn't like to say which one is better, but they're probably the two best hitters I've seen.

Hasnt Albert done what Frank did for that six year stretch his entire career?

The consistency of Pujols is ridiculous. From his first year in the league, completely dominant up to and including the present.

I cant think of another player who basically dominated his entire time in the league.

Thomas was Pujols for 6 years. Albert gets the nod for doing it for 10 and counting...

Thomas' first ten seasons compare to Pujols' career which currently encompasses ten seasons. I'm pretty sure 2000, Frank's tenth season, was the year he finished second to Giambi in the MVP voting.

Anyway, I think the fan is adjusting to the reality of the game without the type of stuff they've been using for fifteen years or more. There seems to be shock that Pujols is having an "off" year at age 30. Hell, Mickey was finished at about 35. Guys having their best seasons at age 35 or 36 is hopefully a thing of the past. Frank's career adjusted OPS is 156. Pujols is sitting at 172. I'd guess that by the time he retires Pujols ends up right around where Frank did.

Deepends what you are ranking exactly. Pujols is a baseball player. As a baseball player, he is below Mays and possibly a few others.

Frank is a great hitter, but nowhere near the top guys as a complete player.

The best hitter ever. Look at this year he is putting up Paul Konerko like numbers

Best offensive player i've ever seen. His 1st 10 years are already comparable if not better than the all time greats of the game. He's also a solid 1st baseman. He's shown that he's a great postseason performer too.

My opinion begins and ends with the first four words of the thread title. I don't deal in hypotheticals.

Well, that's nonsense. Both guys are first baseman, the least demanding position on the field. And while I'd give Pujols the decided advantage as a defender, that aspect of each of their games is negligible. These guys are hitters. It's silly to compare either of them to guys who were superior players at premium defensive positions.

Ted Williams didn't give two shits about playing the outfield. He sure could hit, though.
If there was no DH, Frank would have just been a below average fielding first-baseman and a great hitter for his entire career.

I once heard a story that Ted came to spring training one year without a glove and just borrowed one from DiMaggio or Doerr when he had to take the field.

Also, I wouldn't even say Frank was a below average first baseman outside of his atrocious throwing.

No, I would still have to go with below average. That's not what's important, though. Other than Ozzie Smith, how many players get in the HOF based on fielding?
Mazeroski on fielding and one homerun, I suppose. He was elected by the veteran's committee, however. So, I don't really count him.

Like I said, without the DH, Frank would have played the field for his entire career as along as he continued to hit.

Griffey and Bonds would be at the top of my list. I think they all cheated though.

I wouldn't be suprised if almost everyone from about the late 80s to the mid-to-late 00s cheated in one way or another. LET THE RECORDBOOKS FROM 1988-2010 BE BANISHED! (along with Flub Selig as Commish).

Based on the fact that Omar Vizquel's numbers are almost identical to Ozzie Smith's career numbers, do you think he will make it in the HOF? I compared both of their numbers recently, and they are very similar, and I would even rank Omar better with the glove. I always thought Ozzie was a better hitter, but I guess the popularity of the "Wizard" distorted my memory.

He's approaching 3000 hits and he strikes me as a guy who will hang around just to get it.

If he does, he's in
