10 straight seasons with 200+ hits. His Hall of Fame bust is already gathering dust.

Has there ever been such a gap between the greatness of a player and crappiness of his team?

Not only one of the best hitters of all time but also played Clemente level right field. Just a great all round athlete and player

Clemente is overrated.

Ichiro is better than him.

It's a shame Ichiro's stuck on a really bad Mariners' team. They can get a great deal of talent in return if Seattle ever decided to trade #51. There's a certain team that can use Ichiro to upgrade their right field position...

He might be the best all around player to have never played in a World Series.

You have Ichiro ahead of Frank Thomas?

Ichiro's OPS is only .756. He's bad at baseball.

If Ichiro is in the National League he never wins Rookie Of The Year.

Ichiro is one of the best ballplayers of his era. He will surely be a 1st ballot Hall of famer. It's just too bad he did not play in N.Y. Boston, Chicago or L.A. where he would have gotten a lot more notoriety. The thing is, he could have stolen many more bases had he wanted to, but he only stole a base, if it was a situation that called for it. he didn't steal bases, just to put up great stats. He could bunt and do all the little things you see so many players fail to do well, if at all.

Watching him play, I think he may easily be the smartest player I have ever seen.

So this is less of a praise to Ichiro and more of a shot at Nyjer Morgan.

No....wrong. It is indeed praise for Ichiro. Was there a mention of Nyjer Morgan??? No. If you want to take a shot at Morgan, go ahead, but do it yourself and stop projecting things in my posts that are not there. There are many players that steal bases looking to fatten up their personal stats to get a better salary and not just do it in the right situations so as to help their team. Their priorities are messed up. Ichiro is a very smart player, so he steals a base when the situation calls for a stolen base, bunts when he should, hits behind runners, throws to the right base...etc. The post was nothing but praise for ichiro and the fact that he does many things well that lots of players don't do well, if at all.

Yes, sort of. Ichiro is a better "all-around" player than Thomas (I assume that was Frank's original point).

But hitting is so much more valuable than defense that saying Ichiro is better than Frank at all is silly. Would you say Jimmy Piersall was a better all-around player than Ted Williams?

Post subject:  Re: Ichiro

Frank Thomas is the rare exception because his hitting was so good, that it erased his bad defense alltogether.

Obviously Frank was the better hitter, but I don't think I can name anybody (Ted Williams?) else who was better all around but never played in a World Series.

Teddy Ballgame had a poor (.200 batting average, 1 run batted in) World Series against the Cardinals in 1946.

Yeah. Frank played a little bit in '05 but was done by mid June. Even Shingo Takatsu got a ring in '05
