BROCKTON, Mass. -- Former Boston Red Sox and Cubs first baseman Bill Buckner has agreed to become manager of the independent league Brockton Rox. Buckner played for five teams in 22 major league seasons and had 2,715 hits. But he's best remembered for allowing the Mets' Mookie Wilson's groundball to go through his legs with two outs in the 10th inning of Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, giving New York a series-tying victory. The Red Sox went on to lose the series, missing out on their first championship since 1918. They would not snap the "curse" until 2004. Buckner said in a statement that he's excited to return to Massachusetts. Rox CEO Chris Carminucci praised Buckner's vast baseball knowledge, and called it a "great day" for the Rox. |

Good player. He had one of the great years of clutch hitting I've seen in 1982 for the Cubs. |

heard legendary stories about how much tape and how long it took for this guy to play one game when the ankles were basically gone, but he could still hit. |

A great hitter who has a career defined by one error. That is sad. At least it didn't happen on the Cubs. We had Leon "Gator-glove" Durham for that. |

You may be suprised to learn that as a youngster I was a fan of both teams and went to far more Cubs than Sox games. Bill Buckner was one of my favorite Cubs. |
