Who's the worst money in baseball? The top two contenders that come to mind are, obviously, Alfonso Soriano and Vernon Wells. Being in Chicago my gut would be to bellow SORIANOOOOOOO!!!!! however, at 4yrs/72mil his average season over the last 4 seasons looks something like this: .271/26/70 13SB .327OBP .832OPS

...and then there's the curious case of Vernon Wells, who the Angels acquired for Mike Napoli and Juan Rivera... he's due 4yrs/86mil and his average season over the last 4 seasons looks something like this: .267/20/78 9SB .321OBP .770OPS

This obviously begs the question that has been asked here: WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH JIM HENDRY? if Arte Moreno and Tony Reagins are looking to take on arguably the worst contract in all of baseball, thus burying consensus #1 prospect-in-baseball Mike Trout in the process (unless they're going to trade Bourjos?) seriously, they would have done better to take Soriano!

Can you guys think of anyone in baseball who's worse money than Soriano/Wells?

Wells and Soriano are pretty good examples.

I'd throw Matthews Jr. in there too,but he only has 2 or 3 years left. But that was just bad paper right there...

Helton, Soriano, Wells, Zito, Carlos Lee, Hafner, and J.D. Drew.

Actually I looked up Sarge, Jr. and he's only got this year left with the Mets at 12.4mil, 10.9mil of which is being paid by the Angels. Last year they paid the entriety of his ~$11mil deal... damn. Was he that much of a clubhouse cancer, or just a sunk cost that Arte Moreno wanted out of the fans' minds in Anaheim?

I've read a good handful of opinions that Arte Moreno is commanding Reagins to make all of these grandose moves in order to "make a splash", i.e. Hunter, Kazmir, Haren, and now Vernon Wells.

All the relatively cheap beer in the world ain't gonna keep the fans drunk enough to deal with this one, methinks.

Milton's 11 mil for this year is bad. Not only is he awful, but he destroys all that surrounds him costing them even more money in the end.

I think the Mariners would rather pay Eric Milton 11 mil than Bradley.

You could do a lot worse than 120 RBIs though... if I'm not mistaken he had some sort of injury entering the 2009 season, as I remember making a trade for him in fantasy baseball and using his A-Rodesque numbers to help propel me to a ~30point victory in that Yahoo publeague.

BTW, I know it's the wrong forum but are there any good quality CSFMB fantasy leagues?

I also think the Red Sox grossly overpaid for Carl Crawford

Maybe but Carl Crawford will turn 29 during the season while A-Pud will be turning 36. Who would you rather have on your books, Carl Crawford at 7yr/$142 or A-Pud at 7yr/$174?

I'll throw Kerry Wood into the discussion, and entirely because of the clause in his contract that includes a commentary job after retirement.

That will be considerably more painful to Chicago than any dollar amount.

Probably.

The preseason college baseball rankings should be out soon. Not sure if your Hawgs are going to make the top 25.

They lost a awfully lot last year to the draft, I know they like their new recruiting class coming in.

The list just came out. They're not in the top 25. Not surprisingly Florida is #1. Other ranked SEC teams are Vandy #4 (my pick to win it all), S. Carolina #7, and LSU #22. Hard to believe Auburn didn't make the list. With the new bat rules this should be a very interesting year.

From The Lord's mouth to your keyboard. This hillbilly punk is the worst thief in professional sports. His very existence is a crime against humanity. I am massively offended and I commence out of control swearing every time I even think of this pathetic loser. Thank you for ruining what was otherwise a splendid evening.

A.J. Burnett should be ashamed of himself for stealing, but he is probably too stupid to formulate that emotion in his vacant cranium. I try not to hate people, because I am usually all about love and goodwill, but I really hate A.J. Burnett! Not hate like I would hate Hitler, but sports-appropriate hate.

I never liked Reggie Jackson because that was Thurman Munson's team, hot dog! You want to dog it in the Fenway Park outfield? You will sit down! Compared to A.J. Burnett, however, Reggie Jackson is my favorite Glorious New York Yankee of all time! And that is the very last time I will ever use Glorious and Reggie Jackson in the same sentence!!

Why doesn't A.J. Burnett do me a favor and rip a tendon in his throwing elbow or shoulder?

Peavy could be bad if he doesn't bounce back from his injury.

Dice-K

Lovie Smith

Carlos Silva

Bill Hall for $6 mil

Eric Byrnes got $10mil to play like shit in Seattle for a few games, and then go to MLB network last year

Fire and Passion Rowand for $11mil the next 2 years

There's a lot of bad money in Bud Selig's Major League Baseball, but what the Cubs gave Alfonso Soriano before the Ricketts family bought the franchise from the Tribune Company is something that remains quite the albatross that ultimately will cost Jim Hendry his job as General Manager.
