It has been pretty standard that 300 career wins is a pitcher's ticket to the Hall of Fame. However, 300 game winners are just about a thing of the past. There are no active pitchers who will be winning 300 for years to come and the one with a chance at all is CC Sabathia. And to do that he'd have to have 14 wins per season for the next 10 years. So what will be the new standard and what active starting pitchers today have a shot at the HOF? |

The most likely guys are Halladay and Sabathia. I'd probably put Buehrle next. All of them have a lot more to do. |

I had Mark Buehrle on my radio show in October 2004 shortly after Maddux won #300. Yeah, I know, you're happy for me. I asked Buehrle if he thought he'd have a shot at 300 if he stayed healthy. He said very bluntly that he was sure he could be a 300-game winner. A very confident young man, as he had only won 69 games to that point. He still has a chance of making it if he decides to pitch long enough. It's tough to make it to forty or older. |

JORR, if he makes it to that point...but I am noture he wants to keep pitching until he is 40. He seems like a different cat. I can see him hanging em up when he is 35-37. |

But you know as well as I do, it's tough for most of these guys to walk away. They have to be forced to leave. Maybe Buehrle is different though. |

I think we're going to have to look at career numbers for starting pitchers differently or there may never be a Hall of Famer again. I would suggest a 17 win season now is equal to a 20 win season when we were kids. Is that fair? There have only been 19 20-win seasons in the AL since Buehrle's career began. That said, I'm a guy who believes an exclusive Hall is preferable. That horse has left the barn. If Buehrle gets to 250 I would suggest he compares pretty favorably to guys like Jim Bunning and Don Sutton. His best comparison is probably Jim Kaat- not a Hall of Famer, but better than several guys who are. |
