Got hurt in a play at the plate yesterday. He's going to petition baseball to have the rule changed so a runner isn't allowed to make contact with the catcher

So if it's going to be a close play at the plate at all, the runner shouldn't try to score for fear of hitting the catcher?

Follow the advice of the great Jack Parkman

Next time, don't stand on the tracks when the train's coming through.

He was in front of the plate, but it was a clean hit. It wasn't even that violent of a hit I thought. Just that his leg got caught under him. Same thing could happen to a runner's leg during a slide into 2nd base.

Its unfortunate, but its part of the game. 16" softball leagues that elmhurst steve play in have "must slide" rules. MLB does not and should not.

Agreed Frank.

I guess maybe I could see a rule where the catcher has the ball and the runner is 10ft or so away where the Ump would call him out to avoid contact. That was a clean play yesterday.

It's also part of the reason teams are moving their prize catching prospects to the outfield/1B. Bryce Harper etc.

The collision at home plate in the Marlins/Giants' game late last night was not for the squeamish. I'm not so sure that there's much that can be done by MLB's powers that be to avoid ugly confrontations that quite simply are part of the game. It sucks that Giants' catcher Buster Posey's knee appears to be all busted up and that his season is likely over as a result of the collision. I believe the same thing happened to Indians' catcher Carlos Santana in a game one year ago, and his season was also cut short.

Sabean, on his weekly KNBR radio program, said Cousins' hit was "malicious" and "unnecessary," adding that photographic evidence showed Cousins veering to his left to hit Posey, shoulder to shoulder, in a "premeditated" act.

The GM's harshest statements in the lengthy interview came when co-host Ralph Barbieri noted that Posey had no desire to hear from Cousins.

"I don't blame the kid," Sabean said of Posey. "Why not be hard-nosed? If I never hear from Cousins again, or he doesn't play another day in the big leagues, I think we'll all be happy."

Sabean did not back down when asked shortly thereafter if his comment was a bit harsh.

"No," Sabean said. "He chose to be a hero, in my mind. If that's his flash of fame, that's as good as it's going to get, pal. We'll have a long memory. We talked to (former Giants catcher) Mike Matheny about how this game works. You can't be that out-and-out overly aggressive.

Cousins was in tears about what happened to Posey and has repeatedly tried to reach him to no avail, and now this verbal diarrhea. I feel less bad about Posey being out if he's declining to talk to Cousins, and am glad that the entire thing most likely means no playoffs for the clown Sabean. Hope he gets fined too.
Sabean had shit to say about J.T. Snow plowing into Pudge at the end of the 2003 NLDS.

"Snow's take? "The play was clean,' he told The Chronicle. "Remember, too, that as soon as Buster went down on one knee, he was in a position to get hurt.'"

For a brand new poster, you should be commended for your contributions to CSFMB, not only for Sabean story, but the valuable insight regarding the Snow/Pudge play which is very similar to the play he's complaining about. Nice work!

Unless, of course, it's an independent marketing slogan and not being treated as a sentence.

Why is there a period after it if it is not a sentence?

Because I wanted to use the symbol of a period instead of typing out the word P-E-R-I-O-D. In this forum, I will also type fragments for effect.

Apparently, MLB's new V.P. of Operations Joe Torre wants to have a word or two with Giants' G.M. Brian Sabean pertaining to the Buster Posey injury...ESPN.com has the story.
