We have our first semi-big trade.

Rockies acquired 2B Mark Ellis and cash considerations from the Athletics for RHP Bruce Billings and a player to be named later.

Ellis is a tremendous defensive player and should hit for a little more pop outside Oakland. Billings is a run of the mill middle reliever. This is a good move by the Rockies.

The Rockies simply weren't satisfied with the duo of Jonathan Herrera and Chris Nelson at second base, and Mark Ellis suddenly became available when he lost his starting 2B job to Jamile Weeks with the A's. Something tells me the Rockies aren't done dealing.

This is an all Jim Hendry deal.

"BOLSTER" a Position of a guy that hits .244 with a guy that hits .217, when you already have a .238 guy backing him up

and make sure 2B is always your strongest depth position!

The Brewers and Mets announced that Milwaukee has acquired Francisco Rodriguez and cash for two players to be named later.

This is a bit of a shocker. The Ax-Man hasn't blown a save since April 18th so I can't imagine they will bump him for Rodriguez. Not sure how he will take to the set up role. The players to be named later can't be much.

KRod has a $17million option that vests if he finishes 55 games this season. I bet the Mets were glad to get out of that, and because of that I would think that Axford will remain closer.

Post subject:  Re: Trade deadline-2011

They were saying this morning on my drive into work that Krod will be the 8th and Ax the 9th. Now, I am sure he will still get a chance to save some games, but the stipulation is if he finishes 55 games, and he is at 34 now. I don't think the Brewers will let that happen and I would be willing to bet they let that be known. Now, if Axford gets injured all bets are off and you do what you have to do and worry about next year then.

Interesting that a former Angels coaching staff member would want him back as I believe he more than wore out his welcome there.

I dont root for injuries. But that would be an interesting situation.

What if the Brewers are 3 games back with 8 games to play and K Rod has 54

I would almost be willing to guarantee that he would pitch, it is the way Attanasio has always done things since he has owned the Brewers. Take for example this year, the easiest thing to do with Fielder would have been to trade him for whatever you can get. You know he will not be back next year, but they have held onto him and will take the draft picks.

It's kind of a risky move, Hawger but you have to love your team stepping up like this. Do you think they had a bigger need in the bullpen or at shortstop?

Author:  Hawg Ass [ Wed Jul 13, 2011 11:14 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Trade deadline-2011

I think the bullpen, but I do expect them to do something small at shortstop. Their back end is old for the most part and hasn't stayed healthy with Hawkins and Saito. Loe has been good and bad, I think this is a great move and then to get the Mets to pay the buy out plus with the cash they sent over is a deal I don't think you can pass up. From what I understand the 2 minor league guys they gave up will come from the lower ranks.

Yeah I've been reading the only reason the Mets made the trade is to get out from under that $17.5M option for next year which is beyond ridiculous. I'd just hate to see something happen and have the Brewers forced to choose between winning and kicking in that god awful option.

Hendry is gonna be pissed. The Astros have traded Jeff Keppinger to the Giants for some minor league players (not sure if they are prospects or not). I know he had his eye on this guy to complete his collection.

Here is one: How about Aram to the White Sox for Edwin Jackson? That way he stays in Chicago & the Cubs get a starter.

Braves beat writer says the Braves are close to a deal with a RH bat. I'm guessing it's Under Pants.

The Tigers have acquired Wilson Betemit from the Royals for prospects Antonio Cruz and Julio Rodriguez.

This is good for two reasons. 1. the Tigers have Wilson Betemit (ha-ha) 2. this means the Brewers and Angels are still in the market (Mark Teahen) for a 3B.

You think Mark Teahan and his $15million contract and his .214 avg is something that can be moved?

Post subject:  Re: Trade deadline-2011

Yes but they would probably have to pick up some of the remaining money. He's versitale and has been pretty decent at 3B this year.

The Tiger infield of Betemit, Peralta, Guillen and Cabrera has to be one of the most putrid defensive units in recent memory.

He does suck, Aggravated. If it were up to me, Mark Teahen would be playing right field, second base to give Gordon Beckham a breather and/or first base to give Paul Konerko & Adam Dunn a rest from the field. Teahen sucks at third base.

The reason why Teahen has been getting more playing time is because Brent Morel isn't much better with the bat. I don't know if Ozzie will come clean, but get used to this. For the forseeable future, I think third base will now be a platoon with Teahen getting the bulk of the time vs. righties and Morel vs. lefties and/or coming in for late inning defense.

Teahan has more pop, but Morel's average has been anywhere from 35-50 points higher over the last week.

The Nationals have acquired Jonny Gomes and cash considerations from the Reds for outfielder Bill Rhinehart and left-hander Chris Manno.

This deal is about opening a spot in left field for Yonder Alonzo and Jonny Gomez is more than expendable. I guess Gomes is an upgrade over LaYnce Nix for the Nats. Manno looks like the better prospect but he looks like nothing more than LOOGY.

I heard Ranger mention this during the "Business of Baseball" segment on last night's "Lowe's Pregame" in advance of Tigers/White Sox. It appears as if Carlos Beltran is the biggest prize of the MLB Trade Deadline sweepstakes, and Ranger mentioned something last night that the Mets' outfielder will only go to a team that agent Scott Bora$ feels is best suited to play for a World Series ring. That eliminates Cleveland, based on what Ranger said.

A trade of Rasmus to the Blue Jays for Jackson, Dotel, and Rzepczynski is imminent, reports Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

This would be a hell of a move by Toronto. Frasor, Stewart, Dotel and Rzepczynski for Colby Rasmus. They'll have a hell of an offense after they sign Prince next year.

This a good short-term move for the Cards though you'd think they would also get some long-term help for a guy like Rasmus. Jackson gives them another solid starter, Dotel will upgrade the bullpen and could possibly close and Rzepczynski is a pretty good long reliever/spot starter. It also means Jon Jay will be the everyday centerfielder.
