Madson is done for the year, and Marshall is their closer for now. Chapman is being shifted back to the pen, possibly to close down the road. At least one source said they've called the Cubs about Marmol.

Hanigan? Why? That said, I would ask for a player package like it's 2010.

He is a good defensive catcher/intelligent game caller who is actually a decent hitter when given the chance. He also doesn't have a vajay like Soto. I would give then Soto and Marmol for Hannigan, Naftali Soto and Billy Hamilton.

Why would the Cubs want another first baseman? But I'm not really thrilled about the remaining Cincinnati pitching prospects.

Make one and outfielder or use them to make another deal that suits the Cubs future plans better. Other than those 2 prospects and Mescaro I don't like much of what Cinci would have available. I guess I could be ok with Mescaro and Hamilton for Soto and Marmol and be happy.

Accumulating talent regardless. Got it. I'm not trying to take a shot at the Reds, but they did sell a ton of farm acres for Latos. That's also why I'd have no problem coming strong with a Marmol proposal. Although they have control over Latos, and signed Marshall, this is the "all in" year. I don't see Votto sticking around.

Do you mean the Reds' catcher Mesoraco?

You guess you're ok with Billy Hamilton and him?

What if the Reds also threw in Votto, Bruce and Champman as well. Would that put it over the hump for you?

Maybe they could also add Phillips and Latos to make sure the Cubs got fair market value for Soto and Marmol. Soto did beat out Votto for ROY.

Marmol is owed $16.8M over the next 2 years. If the Reds offer a coupon book to Skyline Chili and a handfull of Dustiny's used toothpicks for his tired ass they should jump at it.

Soto and Marmol are both above average for their respective positions. Dusty loves him some Soto as well. I would be fine with Hamilton and Hannigan but I figure they should at least ask for Hamilton and Mesoraco.

Marmol isn't consistent but when he's on very few guys are better.

He is going to be too expensive when having a closer will actually matter so they better get what they can get when they can still get it.

the reds would be the ones in need here, looking to acquire a closer for a good team that has a chance to contend. no way if you are the cubs do you accept hannigan and lesser prospects in a trade. if they want marmol you would make them pay with a top prospect. if mesoraco wasnt invoved the deal i wouldnt even talk to them. marmol is one of the few bargaining chips the cubs still have. if the reds dont want to do that, end of conversation and keep marmol.

if the reds want to win and they feel they need a closer to do it, it is their responsibility to pay the price for that, not the cubs to settle for more "guys" just because the reds need marmol.

This. I'm not saying this is 2009, but if the Reds called the Cubs, you aren't "settling" for anything.

why?..the reds got the better end of that deal clearly...i would be n favor of getting anything for marmol because i think he has been over worked the last few years...but i think the cubs can get something better in return if they wait til the deadline and have a couple teams to deal with.

There is no way any deal is seen "clearly" so soon after it was made. It takes awhile to be able to judge who got the better end.

Solidifies my stance.

based on a few weeks of spring training, everything is so clear. oh my.

i do agree that unless a team like the reds or someone made a huge offer before the season that if im the cubs i roll the dice that marmol gets off to a good start and wait until the deadline. i would not be in a hurry to trade him right now unless it is a no-brainer offer. if he gets off to a solid start he may be in demand come July. that being said, im still not sold in Marmol being a great closer. i think he was a GREAT setup man, but great setup men are rarely satisfied with being great setup men and all to often they become less-than-great closers.

I thought it was clear that a trade cannot be judged on Spring Training statistics. Especially deemed being bent over, or clearly being on the wrong end in a trade. It's very possible Travis Wood could suck. Let's not forget there were other parts to the trade. But it would be hilarious, if it weren't sad, to see this reaction. I'm certain the front office has spent the better half of this week drinking scotch, mumbling "how did we let this happen." When I'm an optimist, others are really being negative.

i did not need spring training to form an opinion..i said it at the time the deal was made...wood is exactly who i thought he was..at best a 5th starter and probably not even good enough to make a bad rotation..and torreyes will never amount to shit at the big league level..i don't care how good a guy hits in A ball..with his size he will never make it in the bigs.

Not that we needed any more evidence, but that right there is a great example of why you are a lifetime member of the Bad sports thoughts thread here on CSFMB

The only thing I don't like about the Marshall trade is that he was traded within the division and then signed an extension meaning they will likely see him regularly for the next 4 years at least. Maybe these guys will be chips in another trade, maybe they will suck or maybe some of them will end up being really good.

If you go back and look at the stats from early in Marshall's career he was below where Wood is at thus far. He has alot of time to improve at his craft just as Marshall did.

If they can unload Marmol, do it. Dusty will throw him in 80 games and blow his arm out. As to Marshall, I said at the time they did not get equal value. Wood did look decent today however, but Marshall should have been shopped more.
