He was only roidy for about 5 years in there - including his MVP award. He was still quite good the other years. Definitely top 5 catcher of all time.

Johnny Bench, Carlton Fisk & Gary Carter are all ahead of Ivan.

Actually, Damian Miller was the best catcher in Cubs history. He got them as close to a World Series as they'd been in generations. No surprise what happened after they got rid of him in '04.

I think I would put him on par with Fisk if you count IRod's roid years. Fisk had more power numbers, but Rodriguez was the better defensive catcher in my mind.

Well, the one thing you have to understand is, that when you are talking about catchers, you have to look at the infield as a whole. Now, with the machine you had great players at every position, and a really great player at second base. You had a great player at catcher, but his greatness can only be determined based on the greatness of the infield as a whole. If Ivan Rodriguez was on the Machine, I think that his greatness would have been helped and we could definitely be looking at him and saying he was the greatest catcher of all time. But given the climate he played during and the many teams he was on, most of them with subpar infields and all of them with medicore second basemen, No, Jon, I don't think we can say that he was the best of all time.

Then your mind is seriously fucked up. There's a list of pitchers a mile long who complained about Rodriguez' need to call fastballs in bad situation in order to boost his % of throwing out runners.

I'd actually put him ahead of Fisk and Carter, but behind guys like the aforementioned Bench. As well as Berra, Campanella, and Cochrane. No idea were Piazza would be, but definitely one of the best hitting catchers ever.

*sigh*

Players in all of their eras were a product of the era. Guys playing in the dead ball era would have had better offensive numbers if the played in the roid era...probably.

Roid guys would not have been as good offensively in the 60's and 70's

blah blah blah

BOYD'S TOP 5 CATCHERS OF ALL TIME
1. Johnny Bench
2. Carlton Fisk
3. Gary Carter
4. Ivan Rodriguez
5. Yogi Berra
