Cubs first baseman Ernie Banks restrains Ron Santo as Santo tries to go after a heckling spectator in the stands during a spring training game in Scottsdale, Ariz. on March 30, 1970. Santo stayed in the game and the spectator was removed.

The Hawk picture is classic. Busch Members Only jacket with the Elton John/Richard Petty combo shades.

It looks as if Hawk is also wearing a championship ring of some sort. What championship did Hawk win?

Maybe an AL Pennant ring from Boston?

That's a cool pic...too bad Zambrano and Clement refused to wear the pinstripes and insisted on wearing the blue pajama tops in their starts.

What a moment in time, thinking we had the best pitching staff every assembled. Ignorance was definitely bliss.

Seeing that picture really cuts me deep. That staff should have been dominating the NL for a decade.

Wasn't Maddux near 40 in the 2004 season?

Yes I wanted a 50yr old Maddux anchoring the rotation.

this picture reminds me of the 2002 cubs advertising campaign which featured a full-page ad in the sun-times/trib that had SOSA/MCGRIFF/ALOU jerseys hanging there above the season schedule, and the big font brazenly asked me "ARE YOU IN OR OUT?!?!"

my response, as relayed to my uncle and/or anyone else who knew baseball, was "grounded into a double play"

for the record, mcgriff (.273/30/103) had 13 GIDPs, alou (.275/15/61) had 15, and sosa (.288/49/108) had 14.

the 2002 cubs would go on to be 67-95, partially thanks to the timeless wisdom of one bruce kimm.

I really thought that was the beginning of a Cub run of dominance.

At least they MADE their starts for the most part.

Prior and Wood looked dazzling in their pinstripes doing the towel drill

2004 Cubs: The Team With No Weaknesses.

They were the best ever. Their record and failure to win anything does not matter. You just know they were the best. The actual results are a crapshoot. It's all luck. That team was the best.

Did you?

Ill bet you were skeptical.

It was all Prior. If he would have panned out and become Pedro, the Cubs could have built around him.

I gotta say, Hendry DID seem to fill every hole.

Needed a better bullpen: Got best middle reliever in baseball
Needed to get more left handed: Got Todd Walker (coming off a great post season) and Super Sub Todd Hollandsworth
Needed a better first baseman: Got Derrek Lee entering his prime.

They were far from a team with no weaknesses but I remember being very satisfied with the moves

No. That month in March where they were considered a great team really caused anxiety.

That was probably Hendry's best offseason.

But of course it was Chip Caray's fault that the team tanked during the last 10 days of the season.
