At least Ozzie Smith and Budweiser are petitioning the White House to do so...

...not gonna happen, and even if it did, I'd still have to work it...but shit, if building a Deathstar can get 100,000 sigs...

I'd be a supporter if MLB didn't fuck up opening day like the NFL did.

Agreed...I fail to recognize anything other than the first Monday or the season where the majority of the teams are playing as "Opening Day"...the Sunday night game is fine to get things rolling but this overseas shit they seem to be intent on doing every few years is asinine.

It's the only thing about the sport I actually liked. Every year I could follow almost every team and see what they did for exactly one day and convince myself that this would be the year I would start following baseball before giving up 3 days later. Now the whole pretense is gone and I don't even pretend to try to follow it.

Even if they managed this how do they deal with the different opening days they have? Also, do they still do that dumb series in Japan before the season opener? Lastly, why the fuck do they always take a day off after the opener? Resting from one game?

You would pick the Monday where the majority of the teams are playing their first game.

I believe the series is in Australia this year.

As for taking the day off, it's in case of a rainout. People who pay for opening day tickets wouldn't want to have their game rained out and no longer be opening day I'm guessing.

I love baseball, but this is silly. If they want to make any sports related day a holiday, do that with the Monday after the Super Bowl.

Or the first Friday in April 8)

This seemed cute until I found out it was just Budweiser astroturfing.

I'd personally go with a four day weekend and take the Thursday/Friday for the first week of the NCAAs...

Let me explain to you why this is one of the dumbest requests ever!

WHEN IS OPENING DAY???????????????????? OR IS IT OPENING NIGHT? OR HOW ABOUT THE GAMES IN AUSTRALLIA

MLB , have a real opening day first, then we can talk. 1 Day, everyone plays. Thats opening Day!

Thanks for the explanation. None of us brought that up yet in this thread and it's a great point.

I hate the overseas games and the Sunday night game that ESPN insists on. The Opening Day parade in Cincinnati is a really cool tradition.

Unfortunately, I think the window for making Opening Day a bigger deal has closed, what with interest in baseball dropping hard and fast the last few years.

I had no idea there was games in Australia until bigfan informed me here.
