He has to win a WS at some point though. That is the goal every team has. Calling him the Babe Ruth of GM's is silly.

When Moneyball was written, the Yankees had just won 4 of 5 World Series and were spending money like crazy. Everyone thought that the only way to win was to spend big money.

Since then that thinking has changed a bit. I dont think Moneyball would even be written now.

Yeah, but there were some Moneyball type ideals that led to key signings. David Ortiz and Bill Mueller stick out.

Before Billy Beane wouldn't those have just been called good value signings?

My guess is the White Sox had more Moneyball type ideals than the Red Sox did.

Yes, and they still were. But they found something that was undervalued (obp) and got it. That's pretty much the jist of it

Jermaine Dye wouldnt qualify. A.J. might but I think that was more intangibles.

Also the Carlos Lee for Podsednik trade would be mocked by Moneyball types (and JORR)

Especially when he hasn't even gotten his team to the WS. Most of the time they have lost in the divisional series.

I did not even click on the link, because it is probably more computer generated nonsense. Here is one thing a computer and Billy Beane cannot do - slug seven hundred fourteen (714) home runs.

Well, I wouldn't say that, but it is mildly interesting that the '05 White Sox were cast as a smallball team when they relied on shutdown pitching and home runs as much as Billy Beane's A's (and the Earl Weaver Orioles that drew the blueprint for the A's).
