If you're a Cub fan would you make that deal? How about if you're a Sox fan?

That is interesting.

Would consider for sure.

SP is so much harder to find than a 1B

As a Sox fan, I make that basic deal in a minute. In fact, if I have to consider throwing Avi Garcia or Tim Anderson in, I still do it. A left-handed power hitter is one of the White Sox's biggest weaknesses. It would allow you to move Abreu to DH. But then, I'm not a big believer in Jose Quintana. And the Sox are already loaded with lefthanded starters. But there are a lot of numbers to support the idea that Quintana is one of the best ten lefties in the game, maybe even a top 5 guy. That would be the conventional really smart guy wisdom. I don't buy that, but I look at W/L record more than most of you.

I wasnt a believer in Quintana but he's done it for what 3 years now? And he's improved each year.

The Cubs need pitching and seem like they might be long hitters without positions (aka First Baseman)

I do think Rizzo is a leader and a great guy to have on the team though. I probably wouldnt do it

The reason I started the thread is that it's a deal that makes sense or both clubs but which would probably cause fans of both teams to utter a knee-jerk response of "NO WAY!"

From the Cub perspective, Quintana is a reasonably priced cost-controlled pitcher in his prime that will likely give a team better bang for the buck than Lester, Scherzer, or Price. Also, with Bryant ready to play and Schwarber coming fast, Rizzo is expendable.

From the Sox side, they are loaded with lefthanded starters and desperate for a lefty bat with some punch. Also, Abreu is likely older than advertised and has had nagging injuries. It would be good to limit his time in the field.

But since I know you and how you roll with these hypotheticals, I didnt bite on the knee jerk play action you're running here

What about Castro for Quintana?

Castro could play 2B or 3B

I wouldn't do that.

I wouldn't do it. I'm not sold on Quintana 100%, and I value Rizzo's game more than just "first base power hitter."

What is his game beyond first base power hitter?

Very high OBP and good defense. 7th highest OPS in all of baseball. Team leader.

Red ass, or leader in Cubs speak.

I will say his defense impressed me as the year went on...very solid at saving errors from Castro and Valbuena.

Pitchers terrify me. Trade prospects not established positional players.

Did you sit out in the sun too long yesterday?

You don't create a weakness to fill one, especially with SP, especially with LHSP

Are people of the belief that this year's numbers are a floor for Rizzo over the next 5 years? That would be the only way I would trade Quintana for him.

I don't know if I would use the word "floor". Anyone can throw a bad year. But I would expect him to be as good or better over most of the next five seasons. And I consider Quintana nothing more than an innings eater. He's nothing special.

No, I would say he has 2 maybe 3 years better than this one in his next 10-12 years of baseball.

Yeah, he's a good hitting left-handed first baseman. What do people think you should give up for a guy who is considered a front of the rotation left-handed starter?

and I don't expect he will approach that in the future, especially in the O part of the equation

I think the Cubs would be thrilled with that trade.

As big as a weakness as it might be for the Sox, their offense was fine even with Oaf playing the part of LH power hitter

  pretty sure they already traded Samardzija. Why would they want him back? Even if Rizzo regresses to an average of .270 25 HR 80 RBI you don't do that deal for a .500 pitcher. Like JORR said, Quintana is just a guy.

and Joe Orr is incorrect

They would have kept Samardzija had he signed a long term, club friendly contract....like Quintana. Look at the haul they got for Shark.

I think you guys are whacky the way you undervalue pitching.

Don't under value it at all. So far Quintana is headed for a nice losing pitcher John Danks career. Not trading an everyday productive player for that.

The first four years of John Danks career got him a $60 million contract and deservedly so.

Quintana just keeps getting better year after year.

You're nuts with this Pitching WINS = all you need to know stuff

Even JORR understands there are exceptions

Anyway, Quintana gave up 4 runs or less in 28 of his 32 starts. Thats more than "just a guy"

There may be exceptions, I'm just not convinced he is one. He's starting to seem like the kind of guy who figures out how to give it up in a key situation. He'll have pinpoint control until he walks that leadoff batter in the seventh inning of a tie ballgame.
