Baseball America had him ranked as the #3 prospect in baseball going into the season.

Unreal. Can't remember a player of his standing dying in any sport since Nick Adenhart. Both at 22. Just sucks.

Kyle was clearly a roids thing, which is still really sad. He also was a bit older than both Adenhart and Taveras.

I'm not trying to break the level of these tragedies into tiers, it's just another reminder that they are people.

If it were Kris Bryant the Cubs would come undone.

I thought similarly. In no way is this some thing negative to Cubs but something like this is what I mean by no plan is guaranteed.

Len Bias is probably the best NBA comparison.

I saw the headlines on this a few times before I realized they weren't talking about Pittsburgh legend Frank Taveras.

If Mike Matheny wasn't such a shitty manager, this guy would be alive right now.

Cardinal blogs are abuzz with this kind of comment.

It's terrible. So young, so much talent. He and his girlfriend had a young son, who now has no mother and father.

This is your moment, etched forever in my mind now Oscar. We hardly knew ye.

I enjoy that memory. IIRC he was called in from the back fields to pinch-run for one of the veterans, and they gave him a uniform that didn't exist. FOX was flabbergasted about who #91 was that they just went with MINOR LEAGUE GUY

His talent was obvious. He made it to the majors despite having only one arm.

Sounds like he was speeding. Second person to hit that tree and die

Officials in the Dominican Republic do NOT believe alcohol was a factor in the crash that killed St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras and his girlfriend ... TMZ Sports has learned.

We spoke with reps at the Metropolitan Police Department in the D.R. who tell us ... Taveras was driving "very, very fast" on a wet road when he lost control and slammed into a huge tree.

Both Taveras and his GF were killed in the crash.

Officials tell us an autopsy is currently being conducted on Oscar -- but we're told there was no immediate evidence at the crash scene to lead officials to believe he was drunk behind the wheel.

Officials tell us the weather may have played a role -- because it had been raining around the time of the accident and the roads were slippery.

We're told ... Taveras is not the first person to have lost control and slammed into that particular tree -- another person died in the same exact spot last year under similar weather conditions.

I've been to Puerto Plata (button 48). Its a beautiful part of the country. People in the DR (at least in PP) drive like maniacs. There are seemingly no lanes, no rules on when or when not to turn, and there are hundreds of little scooters all over the place. I cannot imagine it would be a very safe place to drive with any sort of excessive speed.

Reads a lot like Paul Walkers death. Fancy car and let's play Steve McQueen.

Reckless and dumb=death

Just like JFK Jr.
