Bernsy said in "The Second Half" that "Lockouts end when the owners win" as part of a Tweet he sent Mac's EP Jay Zawaski shortly after news of the NHL's latest labor setback became a reality. I don't know if I necessarily agree with that tough talk, but there aren't any winners right now. The real losers are those who work in the arenas, the cleaning crews, the maintenance staff, food/drink concessions, souvenir stands, ticket agents, ushers, etc.

Jon Hubbard, Arkansas Legislator, Says Slavery May 'Have Been A Blessing'

Jon Hubbard, a Republican member of the Arkansas House of Representatives, has written a new book in which he says slavery was "a blessing" for African-Americans, among other questionable statements.

Hubbard, a first term Republican from Jonesboro, Ark., makes a series of racially charged statements in the self-published book, including saying that integration of schools is hurting white students, that African slaves had better lives under slavery than in Africa, that blacks are not contributing to society, and that a situation is developing the United States which is similar to that of Nazi Germany.

The questionable statements in Hubbard's book, "Letters to the Editor: Confessions of a Frustrated Conservative," were first reported by Arkansas Times and TalkBusiness.net.

Regarding slavery, Hubbard wrote:

“… the institution of slavery that the black race has long believed to be an abomination upon its people may actually have been a blessing in disguise. The blacks who could endure those conditions and circumstances would someday be rewarded with citizenship in the greatest nation ever established upon the face of the Earth.” (Pages 183-89)
On the subject of school integration, Hubbard described black students as having a "a lack of discipline and ambition," which he said has hurt the entire educational system.

I'd love to see the context in which he wrote those wisdom-nuggets, just because I'm having trouble believing that someone in politics (even if it is in the backwoods of the world, Arkansas) would willfully torpedo his career like that.

Is that really a wrong statement? Unless you are saying that black people would be better off today living in Africa than in the USA. I think that's his point. That, but for slavery, the millions of blacks who are now US citizens would instead be fighting off aids monkeys and civil wars in africa rather than making millions of dollars selling hip hop records.

TSN's Darren Dreger is tweeting that the NHL plans on cancelling games through November 1st only. He's still holding out hope that the league will reach a resolution and start the season November 2nd. I wouldn't hold my breath.

That figures! History repeating itself? If they're not playing by the time the Maple Leafs & Red Wings are scheduled to play the NHL's "Winter Classic" at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, there won't be any hockey at all this season. Shades of 8 years ago...

The game was starting to make some big strides, it won't be as big as some sports, but making some big strides. Now it is starting to look like there won't be a season after all, I hope I'm wrong.

The game we're getting back will be even more unwatchable than it was last year. I might have to really rethink my hockey fandom if this is the case.

The NHL owners are really hamming up this latest 50/50 proposal as some sort of absolute concession to the players that got slapped away irrationally. "Our VERY fair proposal was ignored, so we're going to take a few weeks off so you guys in the press can shit on the players for not agreeing to it."

It was a PR move that glamorized the 50% aspect and retained 82-game season, which to the average fan sounds fair, but considering how quickly the NHLPA told Bettman to go fuck himself, there was many-a-fly in the ointment. The ownership group needs to accept that this isn't 2004/5 and that Fehr and the PA isn't going to bend over and take it in the ass.

I agree that 50/50 is the way to go, and the ownership group's proposal isn't THAT bad, but the preference on the owners part to publicize each proposal smacks of contempt. Stop playing games, stop making this some PR back-and-forth, and have the representatives conference up and hammer this shit out. Only in the fucking NHL could you have this kind of silly bullshit happen twice in a handful of years, and if this is a full-season lockout, the league is pretty much fucked.

Full season lockout means that contraction is taking place and chances are excellent stars will go elsewhere, especially if they get fucked out of their contracts. All the work the NHL did in the 90's of expanding to unconventional markets will be absolutely undone, and the popularity spike after the turnaround of the game following the last lockout will crumble very swiftly, if it hasn't already from it getting this far.

As if you should be surprised by this, according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun & ProHockeyTalk.com, the NHL will withdraw their latest proposal later tonight. With neither the NHL nor the NHL Players Association in any hurry to resume negotiations anytime soon, LeBrun adds that the league will likely announce more cancellations as soon as tomorrow in Toronto. An 82-game regular season appears more and more unlikely by the hour.

All November games cancelled. Winter Classic and All Star game cancelled on Monday if no deal is reached. NHL Owners=bag of bloody fucking dicks.
