It seems likely that the Penguins and Sabres will play outdoors at Ralph Wilson Stadium on New Year's Day, as Bristol is reporting.

While initially it seems dumb to try to compete against the bowl games, most of the BCS games aren't on the first anymore, so it might be a reasonable gamble. The game shouldn't have any problem selling out, and I personally am contemplating a road trip for this event.

Slappy, you in?

Even though I never watch the NHL I think this a really cool idea. Have they ever done this before?

Yup. It's a novelty that definately wears thin quickly. NHL is in it's death throes.

They did it before in February of 2003 with the Canadiens and Oilers in Edmonton, called the "Heritage Classic" and even included a matinee alumni game before the actual game, and it was wildly successful despite sub-zero temperatures.

A lot of college hockey teams do this as well, also to great success. Most notably were MSU and Michigan at Spartan Stadium and Wisconsin and OSU in Madison.

Rumors of the NHL's demise are greatly exaggerated. I've said it a million times, after the lockout, the league devised an economic model that was not dependent on television revenues, and understands that people get their highlights via other media now, and have direct partnerships with YouTube and Verizon VCast. The model is primarily gate driven, and while there are a few franchises struggling with attendance (a problem all leagues except the NFL have), the league as a whole is doing well enough to increase its revenue-tied salary cap twice in the last two years.

The only thing that would make that picture more manly would be if they showed the rest of his body, which naturally shows him with the remote in one hand, a beer in the other, and some puck bunny's mouth on his wang.

That's going to draw HUGE ratings with all the college football games going on.

It's on earlier in the day than the Bowls, and none of the BCS bowls are on 1/1, and that's even if the ratings mattered.

Good luck thawing your jewels off later that day. Just throw some hot Buffalo wings on frostbites.

The team is set to announce an end to its longstanding policy against broadcasting home games-
