Do you think that the Winnipeg Jets should move to the Western Conference and move Detroit or Columbus to the Eastern Conference to make more geographic sense?

They discussed this when they moved but didn't have enough time for this year. I think Detroit wants to go eastern conference which would suck. Also, heard Columbus or Nashville goes.

Detroit and Columbus are the only Eastern time zone teams in the Western Conf.

Nashville is on Central time.

I'd guess Detroit gets moved East to match up with a resurgent Toronto team (old Norris division rivals)

maybe to further capitalize on border teams (Detroit/Buffalo) popularity in Canuckistan:

LEAFS, HABS, SENS, WINGS, SABS.

BRUINS to the the Atlantic (Flyers/Rangers/Isles/Devils)

PENGUINS to the Southeast

Much like the NFC East, I don't see the NE ever getting broken up.

Send Columbus or Nashville. They haven't been around long enough to preserve any "rivalries"

Yeah, that makes sense.

The most likely move is a straight up, Wings to the Southeast/Eastern Conference for WInnipeg to the Western conference.

Colorado to the Pacific.
Dallas to the Central
Winnipeg to the NW

Apparently Bettman has promised the Wings owner that they are first in line to move East, which really revives more rivalries than it loses:

Quote:
To call this a game changer would be a massive understatement. With Detroit in the Eastern Conference, old rivalries with original six teams like Boston, Montreal, New York, and Toronto are back on in a big way. Throw in a regional foe like Buffalo and put the Wings in battles more often with the likes of Philadelphia, Washington, and Pittsburgh and the Eastern Conference becomes a nightly must-see war zone.

They will never move Pens away from Flyers or Crapitals

Why not just have an Original Six division, and then put all the teams nobody cares about in another division? Rivalry problem solved.

Because you can't break up the NYC/PA teams. The owners are adamant on it, and frankly the Rangers would rather play six pseudo-home games in Newark and Nassau than schlep out to Chicago and Detroit all season (and don't forget three day trips to Philly). The Rags sort of went their own way as far as Original Six teams go. Their fiercest rivalries are the local ones, while Chicago-Detroit and Boston-Montreal have endured through the years. Toronto-Montreal is actually fairly new (or rather, new as a divisional rivalry).

The easiest thing to do is to swap Nashville and Winnipeg, but I feel like we're going to have to wait until the Phoenix/Quebec City situation is resolved one way or the other before we commit to any serious realignment.

Why not just get the fuck rid of the 4 time zone deal and make an east and a west time for god's sake?

Are you asking why the entire country doesn't switch to two time zones? That's a terrible idea.

No. It is not. It's fabulous.

I second that motion. Split it down the middle, Kansas City, MO & East gets the "Eastern" time zone, Kansas City, KS & West get's the "Western" time zone. Case Closed.

Yes, this would have to get done.

Northeast: Quebec, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Buffalo
Atlantic: Boston, New York, New York, Philadelphia, New Jersey
Southeast: Washington, Carolina, Nashville, Tampa Bay, Florida

Central: Pittsburgh, Detroit, Columbus, Chicago, St. Louis
Northwest: Minnesota, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver
Southwest: San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Colorado, Dallas

It would be odd breaking up the Pennsylvania teams, but it would give Detroit & Columbus another EDT Rival & it wouldn't put any of those three teams in the odd position of being in a division w/ the hick teams of the South. Pittsburgh would seem to fit well in a Midwestern division, just as other teams from that area have fit in.

That, or break up the Conferences into two (unbalanced) divisions:

Northeast: Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Boston

Atlantic: New York, New York, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Warshington, Carolina
Florida, Tampa Bay

Central: Detroit, Columbus, Nashville, Chicago, St. Louis, Minnesota, Dallas, Winnipeg (could be in either division)

Pacific: Vancouver, San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim, Colorado, Calgary, Edmonton

Now, if Phoenix stays in Phoenix, then it would be a lot easier. You keep the divisions as is, except, move Winnipeg to the NW & move either Nashville or Dullas to the SE.

The NHLPA will fight tooth and nail against 8-7-8-7 alignment, so have fun with that.

And sure it would make things easier if Phoenix stayed, but no one wants to own the team and keep it there, so...

Detroit and Columbus to the Eastside:

4 of the Original 6 in conference 2. Habs-Wings-Leafs renew Norris division rivalries. Playoff format will result in 1 team from each conference
making a final four.
