This Wednesday starts the 4th round of the CONCACAF 2014 World Cup qualification. Dorks call it the Hex, short for Hexagonal, as it's a 6 team tournament. 1st-3rd go to the WC in Brazil and 4th has a two leg playoff with the Oceanic Football Confederation champion, most likely New Zealand or some other shitty Pacific island nation.

The roster for the first game against Costa Rica is out.

Quote:
U.S. ROSTER BY POSITION (World Cup qualifying Caps/Goals) – Detailed Roster

GOALKEEPERS (3) : Brad Guzan (Aston Villa - 5/3 SO), Tim Howard (Everton – 22/9 SO), Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire – 0/0)

DEFENDERS (9) : Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City – 0/0), Carlos Bocanegra (Racing Santander – 31/5), Geoff Cameron (Stoke City – 5/0), Edgar Castillo (Club Tijuana – 0/0), Timmy Chandler (Nuremberg – 0/0), Brad Evans (Seattle Sounders – 0/0), Omar Gonzalez (LA Galaxy – 0/0), Fabian Johnson (Hoffenheim – 3/0), Michael Parkhurst (Augsburg – 3/0)

MIDFIELDERS (8) : Michael Bradley (Roma – 19/5), Brad Davis (Houston Dynamo - 0/0), Maurice Edu (Bursaspor – 9/0), Jermaine Jones (Card Liability – 5/0), Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht – 12/0), Jose Torres (Tigres – 9/0), Danny Williams (Hoffenheim – 4/0), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City – 3/0)

FORWARDS (4 ): Jozy Altidore (AZ Alkmaar – 17/6), Clint Dempsey (Tottenham Hotspur – 26/10), Herculez Gomez (Santos L. Halper – 6/2), Eddie Johnson (Seattle Sounders – 11/10)

Look at these shitlords! Eddie Johnson's back! Edu hasn't played in like 6 months!

Only able to see the last 35 minutes of the game. Not the way you want to begin, a 2-1 loss.

Some lousy defending on the winning goal, a little effort by Cameron or Gonzalez would have been nice.

No sure how Sasha Kljestan is on this team, strictly MLS quality nothing else

All 3 goals were bad defending. Quality finishes and all, but still due to bad defending. It's a bad loss but unfortunately that's going to happen in away games in Central America. Still, you can't lose after going up a goal.

hey KR73, seeing as you're one of the football mavens here on the board, does the USA still have a good chance of making it to the world cup? Or are we potentially looking at some sort of a monumental failure that will make us even more of an international football laughingstock for 2014?

I was thinking about that at work. I guess the key for USA will be how they do in their remaining matches in Latin America. They have already lost in Hounduras and they play at Azteca at the end of March and USA has only one won there once.

USA's next two matches are at home against Costa Rica at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on 3/22 and then the trip to Azteca to face El Tri on 3/26.

I will be curious to see who Jurgen Klinsmann who will have available for selection in thos two matches. Will Landycakes be available to at least play against Mexico.

I think Team USA can qualify for Brazil 2014. But they can't play like they did against Honduras.

Shit's getting real this week and next. Costa Rica on Friday and Mexico on the 26th in the Azteca. I was reading the roster and there's way too many guys with single digit national team appearances. This qualification could turn in to a real clusterfuck, quick.

No, seriously, you can't see the yellow ball for shit on TV. Good thing about snow though is you really gotta commit to diving because it's too fucking cold to stay on the ground.

I played in shit like this in college. Our conference championship was in Rockford and it was cold and snowy. It was a weekend tournament and when we left for it on Thursday it wasn't too bad. Being college idiots nobody checked the weather so nobody had cold weather gear so by the last game on Sunday we were still out there in short sleeves with maybe a t-shirt underneath. I still vividly remember taking a soccer ball to the nuts but being so numb I looked into my shorts just to make sure my junk was still there and didn't break off. It was terrible, we were terrible.

I thought they were going to call it around the 55th minute when they stopped play. A couple of CR fans at this bar I was at were bitching it should have been postponed. They might have if the weather wasn't supposed to be shitty for the next couple days in Colorado and both teams weren't playing another match a few days later. CR had chances late in the 2nd half. It was just a one time freak of conditions. Costa Rica can protest all they want. Shouldn't have left Dempsey unmarked in the box.

What a gift point. The ref turns down the assistant calling for a pk in the first half and let's Edu mug a guy in the box for an obvious pk in the second half and nothing. All this in the Azteca to boot. Full props to DMB, he's no left back and gave up a bad foul on the edge of the box and gave away a corner in the first, but he did the job over both games.

Im not the biggest soccer guy but it seemed like Edu wa snot playing well. Seemed like he was the one getting beat on those corners which almost went on,not ot mention the blown penalty kick call.

Also, announcer comparing last five minutes to the Alamo

They don't really suck, per se. It's just the same turgid shit it's always been. No legit center forward. No real midfield playmaker (Bradley maybe one day). It's amusing how, when Herr Klinsmann was first hired, pundits thought he was going to change the way the team plays its football. That second half was classic Bob Bradley. Turtle, defend, man mark on the corners. You have to play with what you have. The Under 20 US Team is where the real changes to style are occurring under Tab Ramos.

Guzan has been a great Howard replacement and Omar Gonzalez was stalwart at the back. He should move out of MLS.

They don't look too fuckin' bad. What's gotten into Altidore? Klinsmann has found a lineup that clicks.

So Jozy didn't start on Sunderland because he sucks (in England), not because he's injured.
