Remember the "Bears Finish What Katrina Started" guy?

http://www.snopes.com/photos/signs/chicagobears.asp

Honestly, this kind of sign would never hae popped up if the Saints didn't use Katrina as their rally cry.

In my humble opinion, it's just as tasteless to use Katrina to sell a football team as it is to use Katrina for a sign like this. If you use Katrina to bolster your football team, you gotta think that this kind of thing will happen.

Many that is true, but an incomplete statement.

I'll give you that the media's intent on using the Katrina angle to make the Saints "America's team" was lame (don't know about tasteless) but I don't see what the problem is if the team wanted to use that as motivation.

What those select Bears fans did was purely insensitive. I don't think they meant to be "mean" or cruel, they might have just been using the angle against the Saints. But it's just in poor taste to say something like that, even if it's just in jest or for the fun of the game. There's still a lot of suffering going on down there.

Especially since the Bears took away their only salvation.

No one is sweeping the continuing problems down there under the rug. It was a horrible storm and the damage done will take a long time to repair.

Was the sign insensitive? Yes. But you need to blame the media for building the Saints up to epic proportions as the sole hope for the people of that area. That was just as insensitive in my opinion. You can't have it both ways.

I do blame the media. It was too easy to grand stand which is all those people want to do anymore.

I don't want to start this up again, I already posted my views on the whole thing and how the media missed the real story with the Saints; but you can't pin this sign on the Bears fanbase and call it the face of the Bears fan. They were jerks, and cast an unfair picture of stereotyping the midwest as provincial and insensitive. I don't know how big the story got, but it shouldn't have been used to get people against the Bears.

I saw the sign pop up once on-line, but never heard any out-pouring of national criticism. Did I just miss all of the hoopla?

i had read some stuff about it from going on NOLA.com (new orleans news hub site) but I don't think it was a big deal nationally. Or maybe I missed it too?
