How about guys who would have been locks had they played earlier/ longer:

Arvydas Sabonis
Sarunis Marcialonus

arguably, Drazen Petrovic

Petrovic was just starting to reach his potential in the NBA when he died. Great player. He was the prototype of the rugged European players like Ginobili and Nocioni. If he could've gotten some playing time before reaching the Nets, he would've had a chance to establish himself.

I didn't think at first that Ray Ray belonged in the "LOCK" category.
But he does.

Ray Allen is an 8 time NBA All Star.

Ray Allen is currently 2nd to only Reggie Miller in All-Time 3 Pointers Attempted and Made.

Ray Allen is 32. Let's give him 5 more years, at a very, very low 1200 pts per season, Ray Ray will be at 24, 186 career points,,,,,,which would land him 16th in All-Time Scoring.

He's in folks

Possibly, if he wins a title or two with Boston. And your math is off a bit if you think Ray Ray is gonna be scoring 1200 points at the ages of 36 and 37. Thats 14.6 ppg, I dont see it when hes that old. His knees are already starting to give. Remember how quickly Gary Payton aged?

I don't know if Marcillounuoouous (i'll never spell that right so screw it) would have been a HoF player...he was great, sure, but I thought of him more like a 6th man type

He could really score though

Remember how every national game Portland played, how the announcers would constantly remind us how awesome Sabonis was before his knees gave out?

No, but I dont think Vince will be in the league at 38, and I certainly dont see Ray throwing down 14.6 ppg after the age of 35.

I wish basketball had a +/- stat like hockey.

I don't know, i watch these games with some of these "superstars" and the on court benefit to the team doesn't add up... keep in mind people seem to like roleplayers like Havlicek and Russell.

I mean if it's strictly career numbers, is Terry Cummings hall-worthy?

That goes in line with a comment I made yesterday about Carmelo Anthony. The guy can flat-out fill it up offensively but personally I don't think he'll ever make a team better unless he changes his approach to the game. Unless that happens, forget about a HOF for him.

KS, you are too numbers oriented. Who has had a better career, Vince Carter or Rasheed Wallace?

There is a +/- category...it's on the box scores in Yahoo

I don't think ESPN shows it

Cool, have to check that out.

I mean, it's not all winning or being a model citizen, but it certainly isnt all numbers either.

The flipside re: the winning argument is, if it was based solely on that, Robert Horry would be in the Hall immeditely upon retirement

As an aside, I think it's kind of weird how it's just the "Basketball Hall Of Fame", and that the NBA doesn't just have its own HoF

And hey, if Dick Vitale can get in for "contributions to the game", maybe Big Shot Rob can

Who you crappin farve Fan - you ALWAYS use stats to support your arguments....i.e. Chris Paul and many others.....

Plus you're white.

Slow your roll young man.

You're not, and haven't been the only one watching the league around here.

Actually I try to avoid using stats as a basis for an argument. I think Chris Paul is the best PG in the league because he routinely outplays everyone he faces except Deron Williams, for some reason that dude has his number.

Currently at 16,504 Pts.....staying on the low side of his career averages, and considering he's 31......let's say he scores 1500 pts a season for the next 7 seasons....he would be at 27004 when he's 38.....which would make him the 7th leading scorer of all time in NBA history.

He's a lock if he stays healthy my friends.

Sorry, I took "Locks" to mean if their career ended today, would they be locks for the Hall of Fame, not if they continued on the current career pace, would they be HOFers. If that was the case, then Lebron is a LOCK. Still not sure about Ray Allen.

LeBron is without a doubt a lock unless he gets a career ending injury in the near future. Ditto for Chris Paul.

I'm with FF on this one. I think Hall of Famers have to pass the "eye test". While watching Ray Allen play, I never thought to myself, "this guy is a lock for the HOF." That counts for something. Maybe he's like the Raffy Palmeiro of the NBA...compiled nice numbers in relative obscurity.

I don't see how Josh Smith,Baron Davis,Andre Igoudola, Elton Brand, and Josh Howard going to hall of fame. Out of all those guys together have 5 NBA All-Star Appearances, 2 NBA ALL-TEAM appearences, and no championships. Plus Tracy Mcgrady has been stricken with injury (like Grant Hill) and Yao Ming is going to the Chinese hall of fame for sure. Plus what team would Vince Carter go into hall of fame as (Nets or Raptors who he backstabbed).

Fixed it for you. No way Vince Carter makes the HOF at the pace hes on right now. Im not sure Jesus Shuttlesworth gets in either.

I'd have to say this list is respectable.
I see CP3 on your list, what about D Rose. he has every bit of the same chance to be a HOFer as CP3.
I would Exclude any of these guys from even the thought of HOF.
Baron Davis, Elton Brand, Ron Artest Yao Ming, T Mac

Who will play more minutes by their career's end Yao Ming of Greg Oden
Yao Mings body of work will not allow him to be ellected, unless the chinese are allowed to vote??? All star...Really?!

The NBA HOF is probably the biggest joke in all sports. Considering guys like Reggie Miller and Dominque didn't get in their first time around.
