I remember Bobby Cox stopping a game to remove Andruw Jones in CF for a substitute, after Jones failed to go all out after a fly ball Cox thought (rightfully) Jones should have caught. Jones was a young player and while it was no doubt a humbling experience, it probably made a bigger impression than had Cox just talked to him after the inning concluded. Castro may well be better for the experience.

So this was in today's paper:

Quote:
"It's not like you give a guy a little breather and let him watch and all of a sudden he's going to have a miraculous (change)," Quade said. "But that's pointing out the seriousness of it, that's taking a little pressure off a guy for a day or two. … There are so many things that go into that (decision).

"That didn't happen because I thought he thought he had (the game) licked. That's an area that gets you on the bench pretty quick too. But there was so much, so fast, and it was so important for this kid. And sometimes you just think 'Maybe it's a little too much right now. Maybe this is a good thing.' It gets taken as 'discipline' but it really wasn't. I really thought it was a teaching moment for the kid to step back."

Looks like Quade is saying much the same thing today as he was back in early September about the benching.
To me that sounds like he was honest in the first place, and he didn't just jump to conclusions and bench the guy without first arriving at the decision after giving it serious thought.

And I like that he said that there's no doubt that castro needs to work on his defense. Spot on, and nice to see truth come out rather than "where'd you play your ball" snark.

I don't think this overall translates into a playoff team, you can't polish a poo, but still... maybe an end to the era of Live and Let Live Cubs management?

yeah it is easy to sit a 21 year old kid with less than 500 career at bats... lets see if he has the balls to sit aramis when he is dogging it, or soriano when he is half assing it.

Aramis is a special case this year.
I guarantee the Cubs won't go near his $16M 2012 option. Thusly, I believe he is in the last year of a contract and will be a FA next year.
I don't think you'll see any dogging at all tis year. He's what... 32 and looking for another contract somewhere?
I expect a fine year from a motivated ARam.

Why do you think I didn't mention him  .
I think what happends with playing time for Soriano has a lot to do with how our younger outfielders progress. I don't see Quade benching him if he's the best offensive outfielder, especially early during the easy pickings or late during a (not saying this is likely) playoff push.
But something worth considering is that a "learning lesson" for a 20 year old making a boneheaded mistake is much different than trying to teach something to a guy like Soriano, for whom a benching would have little to any effect.
I don't think the secnarios are comparable.

Soriano won't get benched for a lack of effort. Benched for a lack of productions seems almost a lock.

hmmm i dont think quade has the balls to bench soriano on performance or effort or lack of production. benching soriano would make hendry look even worse to ownership. ricketts took cheap way out by not firing that clown, if soriano was benched with 4 years left on this massive deal...hendry would almost certainly be canned after the season.

I don't think anybody is under the illusion Soriano's is a good contract anymore, even Hendry.
