Please tell me the laptop wasn't your only computer.

I don't have a laptop laying around, but if you decide to go with a new one, I have had a Toshiba that I got at Best Buy pretty cheap, and it's worked pretty good thus far.

If all you need is a laptop with decent memory and wireless capabilities, you can find one on craigslist for cheap...I bought mine for 100 bucks...best 100 bucks I've spent...and I'm sure one of the tech geeks around here have a burned copy of MS Office they can let you borrow.

Just download and burn a Linux Mint iso and install that on both your laptop and your slow desktop computer.

Depending on what you and your friend did - you may be able to do an inplace repair.

http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/13 ... indows-xp/

If your original install is still on that hard drive you shouldn't need a key. The key to doing this is NOT going into Recovery Console - the screenshots outline it pretty clearly so I think you can handle it.

I would still do the repair first. You will save all data - it just replaces all the Windows files. It will reset drivers and you will have to run Windows Updates again though.

Now it has a red x. says network cable unplugged.

So how do i or what do i need toset it up so i can connect to the wifi (my neighbor i think)?

Network cable unplugged implies you are looking at the wrong network connection (that is the notification icon for plugging it in hardwired style).

Go to Control Panel, Network Connections, then find the Wireless Connection. Enable it, and search for Wireless networks.

Right click "My Computer," "Properties," "Devices," "Device Manager."

Find the Card on the list and delete it. Then restart the CPU. This just re-adds it, but might do the trick.

In Device Manager, right click your CPU name (first line on the list) and select "Scan new Hardware changes" or whatever it says.

I did that and no luck which led me to believe that he does not have an internal wireless network adapter. I'm thinking that he was using an external one before. The only network device it is recognizing is the hardwired port.

What's the model number on that thing again RPB?

It should still recognize the hardware if it's in there, I would think.

Search the model number and look for a "Utility" program (software). Not the driver, but a utility program because it might have some setup software that could provide either an automatic setup, or a FAQ or the like.

So I guess I can just buy a wireless adapter. im seeing em for like 25-50$. Cheaper at evilmart of course. Im probably gonna go pick one up later today.

It shows 5 things under other devices with a ?

MASS STORAGE CONTROLLER
MULTIMEDIA AUDIO CONTROLLER
NETWORK CONTROLLER
PCI SIMPLE COMMUNICATIONS DEVICE
VIDEO CONTROLLER

Those all say the driver for this device is not installed. I cant reinstall without internet or a software disc

Think thats it?
Would getting an external card work?

External Card would certainly work.

"NETWORK CONTROLLER" might be your wireless card. Have you tried right-clicking it to update drivers and whatnot?

Yes Ive tried, the setup wizard asks tp go online for windows updates or insert software cd. I dont have either

I guess I could go to my buddies house and plug in and search.

But im at the point where if i can end this bullshot by buying a 25$ card ill do it.

But now im wondering if this network controller not being installed would prevent the card from working?

Nah, the new card should still work.

You could also go buy the new card, install it, and then use the internet to fix the internal card. If that works, just return the one you bought.
