Bears cut Tommie Harris
Posted by Michael David Smith on February 28, 2011, 12:55 PM EST

Tommie Harris is headed out of Chicago.

A league source tells PFT that the Bears have cut Harris, a defensive tackle who has been with the team since Chicago selected him out of Oklahoma with the 14th overall pick in the 2004 NFL draft.

Early in his career Harris looked like he was on his way to becoming one of the league’s great defensive linemen; he was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

But Harris is coming off a sub-par 2010 season and was due a $2.5 million roster bonus this offseason. Now he won’t collect that money, and will be free to sign with any team that wants him.

Come to the darkside, Tommy. You'd look good in red, white, and silver.

Barely realized he was on the team the past three seasons.

FINALLY! Harris was a classic case of a guy with tons of talent, tons of money, & no heart or desire.
Good riddance.

He had three pro bowl seasons. He got hurt and the Bears kept him out there hoping he could return to his former self. It was the Bears fault...

Good move. Harris had enough time to prove he could regain his form from years ago and it seemed like he just didn't have it in him. Maybe a change will be good for him

He was done after the injury. The Bears seemed to be the only ones that didn't know that. They wanted to justify the money and it just hurt their line...

He wasn't the only one. Hunter was released too.

Huh? The guy was on his way to the Hall of Fame before he got hurt. I'd compare him to a guy like Wally Chambers.

Kevin Shaffer gone too. Agree with Hank & KI on Tommie...Does this mean they will go DL in the draft? Hope not. Are they looking at a FA right now?

Kind of sad about Hunter.

I'm not sure I want them spending a lot of money on a DT in free agency right now. They spent a ton on DE last season so that would be a lot of money just for the line. I would be comfortable with what they have now and drafting somebody who would be ready to start in a year...

I think they will end up signing a WR in free agency. My guess is they will clean house in 2 years and defense getting old. The window to win is closing. They will go DT in first round and OL in 3rd ish maybe 2nd.

The three technique DT in the cover 2 is pretty important

But its not really a position where guys make it to free agency...if youre good, youre usually extremely valuable.

So you kinda have to go draft for that.

any chance they can parlay this saved money on a WR, there are some intriguing names out there, very deep FA class

Yea. They had to stop production of Tommies head statue when he got hurt because he was a lock for the NFL HOF.

What???!!! You cant possibly be serious.

Jorr,
What exactly do you disagree with? Tommie has a lot of talent but no heart? There are 1000 guys who have said that prior to me saying it. It was pretty well known that Harris was lazy & didn't work very hard. Then he got hurt & he worked even less. Anyone who attended training camp & was paying attention could see it.
That's why Lovie benched him. Lovie really wasnt very fond of Tommie but Jerry would release him, until now.
Harris was just another player who rang the bell with a big contract & signing bonus & was a flash in the pan who didn't have the heart or desire to rehab his injury. It happens all the time in the NFL.

My name is rpb

1000 guys have not said that. No one had anything negative to say about Tommie before his injury when he made three pro bowls.

Heart or desire to rehab? Are you joking?

His knee is fucked...its never gonna be the same again. So he doesnt have the explosion off the ball he had that made him dominant.

Did you think Joe Theissman's injury could have been rehabbed with the correct amount of heart and desire?

You should stop talking about defensive lineman, probably football altogether, but youre especially ignorant when it comes to lineman.

Tommie was a lazy fuck & many of his team mates thought he was a douchebag.

I actually coached OL & DL for 2 years.

Where did you play your ball!

Tommie took out a full page color ad in today's trib thanking the fans, etc for his time here. While I know I am a sucker for that kind of stuff I thought it was a classy thing to do.

Which teammates, do you have quotes or anything to back up this claim? What about the 1000 people who said he's lazy?

Your just making stuff up.

I feel bad for the kids you coached...some of em probably could have been good.
