The Cubs Starting Rotation and what I beleive to be a solid bullpen might keep them around .500 baseball. This team lacks a solid infield defense and has below average team speed.
The OF of Colvin/Byrd/Fukadome is above average "D" wise. I think Soriano/Fuk should battle it out for platooning,not Colvin/Fuk.

And there's way too much faith in Cashner, Wood in the pen. I heard Len on mac's show and he was like "Ooh! These guys can compete with any bullpen in the majors"

Grabow should have a bounceback year,Kerry Wood pitched well for the Yankees,Sean Marshall is coming off a very good year and Marmol is near unhittable.

Buddy and I were talking about this the other day. In addition to Marmol, Wood, Cashner, etc.....you've essentially got 4-5 guys battling for the last two spots in the rotation. The guys that don't make the rotation should be nothing but a bonus to the pen, save for maybe Silva. Guys like Wellemeyer, Wells, Shark, etc. may be just the thing to be not only set-up guys but also innings-eaters out of the pen.

Put me down as believing that the bullpen will be one of the strengths of the team this year.

FWIW - I like Marshall in the pen (provided we have decent starters). My choice at this very second would be Wells and Silva 4/5.

Cashner has a mid-high 90's fastball and a plus slider. He works out his control he can be very good.

My first four are locked in Garza/D/Demp/Wells with 95% 5th starter going to Cashner. Release Silva or put him in long relief so we see him once every two weeks at most.

cashner may have some upside due to his age, time will tell. fix the bullpen? too little too late this team blows.. release silva because he sucks, but his attitude sucks also, and that is the last thing a rookie manager needs. this team has zero shot at winning the division , none.. i prefer aaa unknowns to these turds. marshall is a hell of a pitcher, put him in rotation to replace ted lily

The Sox at this point don't have a closer...they have prospects like Sale who has pitched a grand total of 23 major league innings and Thornton, who would rather be a setup guy. If the Sox can't find a closer, you could have the best set up men in baseball and it will mean nothing.

So to say the Sox have an outstanding bullpen is a little extreme.

It has been said, but all bullpens are crapshoots, but regarding the Cubs bullpen at least you have some experience and your not depending on minor league retreads...Russell, Berg, Stevens etc.

I gotta believe Grabow can't be that bad as he was last year, Marshall had been steady for a few years and Marmol is one of the better closers in baseball. Wood is the wild card, if he is close to what he was in '08, the Cubs bullpen can be very good, if not they will be just average.

I read the headline wrong in the Sun Times yesterday, Thornton prefers a set role, not just a set up role, my mistake.

However, how did Santos do when pitched in the 8th and 9th innings last year? Not very well. Sale pitched well last year but again that was only 23 innings. To say the Sox have an outstanding bullpen when there is no proven closer on the staff is silly, and I don't care how much "insight" you have.

santos had a very good season imo, guy has great stuff .if i remember correctly santos was bounced around the pen pretty much all season. sale and thorton have great stuff also. this is what happens when you take a competent organization who acquire talent. the cubs are inept from the top to the bottom.
