You know, back then, I wasn't allowed to listen to MTV. It wasn't until '93 that we could watch that channel, and I was really into headbanger's ball, alternative nation, and yo! mtv raps.

When I first heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit", "In Utero" was about to released, and I basically was like that guy in the Onion article about Led Zeppelin.

But I tried to be quiet about it...

I think "incesticide" became my favorite album, actually. I loved the b sides.

Nevermind is a perfect record.
In Utero is also perfect.
I remember buying a ring for my girlfriend
at some jewelry store at Lakehurst and they had Q101
on in the background, telling us the sad story about Kurt.

Waiting for the time when I can finally say

I don't really know what to make of this. I suppose I'm both intrigued and perplexed by the above concept. Music has never been my passion. I mean, I like music, but my life has never been changed by any music. No music has ever moved me so deeply that I made life-altering decisions because of it. Maybe that says more about me than anyone else, but I've never understood it. Maybe it's because I'm not musically inclined. I don't know.

Taking this specific example, Kurt Cobain was a very troubled, drug-addled guy with a unique voice and some really great songs. I never read anything else into it other than what a shame it was that he died...the same thing I would think about anyone taking their own life. I don't miss him. He never "spoke" to me. I found more good music to listen to.

I'm not trying to be judgmental here, I'm just saying that I've never understood the intense connections people form to music and musicians.

Killer, I agree with Doug, I think you answered your own question. I share a lot of your thoughts and I think the reason is exactly the same, music has never been a passion to me nor am I musically inclined. But to those guys who are musically inclined and music is a passion to them these things can be huge moments in their life. I have a couple friends who can tell you every detail about the day Cobain died. We are all just wired differently.

I love Nevermind. First time I heard it I was a senior in HS doing AP physics problems with a study group. What I find interesting is how the critical and public opinion of it seems to rock back and forth. First it's the greatest album of the 90's, next it's over-rated, then it's a classic again, then In Utero is 10x better, and back and forth. It was great album. The radio did change. I mean it was changing before, you can list a bunch of "alternative" acts that were just breaking through by then (personally I think Faith No More opened the door just enough for Nirvana to blow it open, but there were others) but Nirvana certainly played the biggest part.

I listened to this a lot when it first came out. I think I'll put it in shortlly and give it a
spin. I also have In Utero and the Unplugged concert and those were pretty good as
well. Nirvana was never my favorite but I do remember the day I heard on the radio
that he was dead and I remember it was a big deal back then.

This album along with many of the other great albums of the era are just unlistenable to me now. Commercial radio has just played this stuff into the ground, and it's to the point that if I hear the opening riff to Smells Like Teen Spirit, it's an instant channel changer. It's the same feeling when I hear "Rock and Roll" by Led Zeppelin or any overplayed hit.

I somehow skipped this whole Nirvana thing. I was listening to whatever hair metal mtv was playing until I stumbled upon Check your Head by the Beastie Boys and never looked back. Then I found Green Day which led me to NOFX, mix in some Ice Cube, Snoop and Dre and the game was officially over. I seriously think I listened to the weird al parody of smells like teen spirit more than the original song itself.

This is a big reason I got into sports talk AM radio. I can't listen to commercial radio
where they kill the songs year after year. A station like the Drive can be ok because
they play such a wide variety but you'll still hear Stairway to Heaven for the 1000th
time occasionally.

Until recently, I had no idea this album was sold on the open market. I was under the impression it was issued too white teenage boys in the suburbs during the 1990's, like a Rubella shot.

I'm not saying it isn't a great album, but it has just been overplayed to death. I can still rock out to Territorial Pissings, or Stay Away every once in awhile, but if I never heard Smells Like Teen Spirit or any of the other hits ever again, I wouldn't be upset,
