Considering Barney is the starting 2B, I doubt that the great Augie Ojeda would have made the team over him.

Barney isn't the starter...Dewitt is the starter for now...unless something just happened that I missed.

ojeda should not have even got a tryout..this team is a joke and run by inept fools. the nl central is weakest division in mlb and this garbage is 3rd place at best

Interesting. I just checked out the cubs official website and they had a piece saying he in fact may very well be the guy at 2nd with dewitt now becoming the utility guy.

I think the Cubs were/are hoping DeWitt turns into a better Ryan Theriot type.

Hit .280 or so, OPS around .730-750, hit around 7-10 home runs and not kill you defensively. They made the deal to shed some salary and not deal with Theriot arb salary increase that was coming

If he sucks, then our 2nd base platoon is laughably bad.

Barney is really smooth in the field. He hasn't played a lot of 2B but he turned a couple nice double plays in the game yesterday that looked like he's been playing there for years. The question will be if he can hit enough to stay in the lineup but that glove should buy him a lot of time.

Dewitt sucks.

You've got a lot more faith in him than I do. If he hits a 270-280 he's our everyday 2B

I see Quade starting Baker against lefties and rotating DeWitt and Barney until one of them 'earns' the starts against righties

I've intentionally ignored all of spring training. I'm going to give these guys until
mid-May to show me at least something. Summer is just not as fun when you are
ignoring your baseball team before June. I was watching upwards of 100 games a
few years back, last year I bet I watched less than 30.

Same.

But he did hit .350 with a .945OPS last year against lefties and .106/.302OPS against RHP.

I didn't realize that Barney was an entire 3 months younger than Dewitt.

Everyone needs to chill, this team is winning the central and making some noise in the playoffs.

I have talked myself into it. Pitching should be good, Pena will be better than Lee was last year. Fuk will be good at first and when he starts to suck Colvin takes over full time. Ramirez is playing for future cash so he should play better. Castro is a stud. Byrd is good and juiced up to the gills. Soriano is due for a decent season, why not this year?
Is it so improbable this team gels with a manager that watches the games and pays attention? The division sucks and everyone is hurt. I am predicting a Bears like horseshoe up the butt season for this team. WS Champs!!!

I have no expectations of this team but it wouldn't shock me if they won it. The nl central is bad this year all around. I don't trust the brewers to do anything. The Cards have a few great players and alot of not great players around them and they were dealt a huge blow with AW going down. I think the Reds played out of their minds last year and aside from Votto will not get the same offensive production from everyone else. Homer and Cueto have both had arm issues this spring which is a huge shocker consider dusty's past.

I think the NL East, West and the AL will kick the shit out of the NL central, but someone still has to win it.

Check that.....The Brewers have just acquired Sergio Mitre. Wisconsin is now primed for its 2nd major sports championship this year.

aa washout? so was oney guillen and he doesn't know shit either.

scorpio, while i agree the division blows and opponents are getting hurt quickly, this team can't beat the reds or brewers and not sure about the cards.

Now in addition to Cueto and Bailey having arm issues, the Reds may be without Arroyo for an undetermined amount of time as he has mono.

is this based on the fact he has never averaged more than .264 or hit more than 9 HR in any major league season, or on his career batting average of .277 and 68 total HR in 6 years in the minors? why would anyone other than blake dewitt expect that?

thats a little vague. sure, every player has "the ability" to get a hit in every at bat. blake dewitt just hit into a double play or struck out, but he has "the ability" to get a hit. show me a link to any scout or scouting service that indicates that dewitt will produce a .270 - .280 BA and hit 15 HR's. he, baker and barney are likely nothing but place-holders until the cubs truly rebuild this roster.

a step in the right direction removing silva from this team, would have been more impressed if they cut ties with samaridza also.. that would be harder to sell ricketts on, due to his age and due to the fact hendry really fucked up with j.s. signing. jeff was taken in the 5th round, number 149 overall . the signing bonus for chris davis (148th player taken that year) 172k. tyler colvin was taken 13th and received 1.4 mill .. evan longoria was the 3rd pick in the draft and got 3 million, clayton kershaw was 7th and got 2.3 mill..tim lincecum 10th pick 2 million. while i understand you have to sweeten the deal for a draft pick who could possibly enter the nfl draft, 7.25 million dollars?? what a dumb reach.

He is too young (and also not a huge clubhouse pain in the ass) to just outright eat all that money in what I think is his last year under contract. If they see some kind of improvement then fine....but if they don't then he would be a perfect guy to ship to the AL West and try to get back young corner infield reclamation projects Brandon Wood or Chris Davis (while also eating most of the difference contracts).
