The signing of Eddy Curry seems like a desperate move, but it's really not. He'll see maybe 10-15 minutes/game at the most. Probably Riley wanting a veteran big at the end of the bench instead of Dexter Pittman.

At 28 he should, in theory, be hitting his offensive skill peak. Maybe the Heat caught lightning in a bottle, but if Eddy was anywhere north of 360lbs it's a long stretch.

Report: Heat could sign ex-Bull Curry for playoff run
Yahoo! Sports reports: The Miami Heat are progressing toward signing center Eddy Curry for the playoffs.

After Heat president Pat Riley watched the ex-Bull work out in Chicago in recent days, he's made plans to bring the 7-footer to Miami early next week for another workout and a medical physical with the ultimate objective to sign him, sources said.

After the Timberwolves bought out Curry's contract in February following the three-way Carmelo Anthony trade with the Knicks and Nuggets, Curry started to work again with trainer Tim Grover in Chicago. It's unclear how much weight Curry lost, but NBA executives say he hovered around 375 pounds when he arrived in Chicago several weeks ago.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas retires from NBA

A succession of foot surgeries nearly brought a premature end to Zydrunas Ilgauskas' basketball career. On Friday, he announced his departure from the game on his own terms.

Ilgauskas was on the brink of forced retirement 11 years ago after five foot surgeries had mentally drained him. But he vowed to give it one more chance after a radical reconstructive surgery. As a result, he was able to reach two NBA Finals and two All-Star Games and retire after 13 seasons.

He announced his decision Friday at an event in Cleveland, where he played the majority of his career.

Ilgauskas played 72 games, 51 of them starts, and averaged 5.0 points and 4.0 rebounds last season for the Miami Heat after playing his first 12 seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

In June, Ilgauskas picked up an option in his contract for next season to leave open the possibility of returning. But after going through the summer, Ilgauskas decided he was done.

"Enough is enough," Ilgauskas told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. "My body is beat up and I'm tired physically. There is no age limit, but everyone knows when it's time."

Ilgauskas, who was picked in the first round of the 1996 draft by the Cavs, missed most of his first four seasons dealing with a series of foot issues. But the 7-foot-3 Lithuanian recovered enough to play in 843 regular-season games, 756 after his final surgery in 1999, and 80 playoff games.

Ilgauskas gathered 2,444 offensive rebounds in his career, which is 41st all-time. He's also 40th all-time in blocks with 1,327.

Ilgauskas was the Heat's most steady center in his only season in Miami. But he was derailed somewhat by an infection in his foot that sidelined him for several weeks in March. He recovered in time for the playoffs but was taken out of the starting lineup in the second round and was not active for any of the Finals games against the Dallas Mavericks.

Ilgauskas said the season -- in which he and the Heat withstood intense scrutiny from the media and fans -- took a toll. Ilgauskas was particularly hurt when he was booed and heckled in Cleveland, where he had been one of the most popular players in franchise history.

"It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the team being put together," Ilgauskas said. "There were lots of ups and downs. When you have a season that stretches so long and it involves more than basketball, it is tough mentally. You are drained, it's a long year."

Ilgauskas was one of the few players who lived through the last NBA lockout in 1998. That experience, and the hectic 50-game season that followed, may have played a role in his decision to go another season. In the past several years, Ilgauskas struggled when having to play on back-to-back nights because of knee and back issues.

"I want to spend more time with my family," said Ilgauskas, who now makes his home in Miami. "I have spent the past 15 years living out of a suitcase. It's time."

Heat eye KDdidit Martin, Joel Przybilla

Archive MIAMI -- The Miami Heat, interested in any and all veteran big men who become available on the market, are in the race for two such players that could make their decisions by the end of the week.

The Heat have offered contracts to both Joel Przybilla and KDdidit Martin, their agents told ESPN.com. Przybilla is expected to make a choice between the Chicago Bulls and Heat, according to agent Bill Duffy. Martin is interested in several teams, with the Heat in the mix, according to agent Andy Miller.

The Sporting News reported Wednesday that Przybilla is planning to make a choice by the end of the week.

Heat president Pat Riley has been recruiting both players as the Heat look to add depth to their frontcourt. According to multiple league executives, the belief is that the 7-foot-1 Przybilla is healthy and believes he can contribute to a contender in a limited role off the bench.

Przybilla played in 36 games for the Portland Trail Blazers and Charlotte Bobcats last season, averaging 1.8 points and 4.0 rebounds.

ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard reported that Martin is considering the Heat, Los Angeles Clippers, San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks. According to league executives, Martin is mostly interested in having an assured role and minutes on a contending team.

Martin averaged 8.6 points and 6.2 rebounds in 48 games for the Nuggets last year. He most recently played for Xinjiang in China before leaving the team in December. He would not be able to play for at least another two weeks, until Xinjiang's season is over. At this point in his career, Martin is seen as an asset for his defense.

With Chris Bosh, Udonis Haslem and Joel Anthony, the Heat have stability at Martin's position and not a lot of minutes available unless there is a change to the rotation.

Miami would have to make roster space to add a player because they currently have 15. Rookies Terrel Harris and Mickell Gladness are on non-guaranteed contracts, as is veteran center Eddy Curry, but the Heat are expected to retain him.
