cuban has been a pretty decent owner for the mavs, but you can't compare nba to mlb..no cap in mlb and cuban would buy a team and players like the yankees have done

I didn't say I was happy. I'm just being a realist. Do you honestly think this team can be better than a .500 baseball team? I picture them being about 10 games under by the end of the season. That's why I said being .500 would be a success. If you expect anything out of this current roster, you're an idiot.

I am a proud idiot then. I dont know why but I just have a feeling about this team this year. I will probably be mocked later in the season for all my early season optimism but I just think that they will click and hang around the top of the division.

I think they have the opportunity to be good enough to win this average to below average division. Somehow the reds continue to piss gold and rainbows though. It will end for them though at some point. Chapman is now on the verge of blowing up his arm too. The Brewers are very beatable too. The Cards just plain suck this year.

The key to the Cubs being able to compete though is still the health of Cash and Wells. Haven't heard a peep about them since they went on the DL and the recent signings of Doug Davis and Ramon Ortiz scare me.

Cuban would have cut the dead meat off the roster, fired Kenney and Hendry and would at least honestly tell the fans what the plan is moving forward as opposed to the Ricketts debt ridden leadership which keeps Kenney, Hendry and all the bad contracts except Silva and hopes and prays the baseball Gods will shine down upon them.

I think everyone would agree that Hendry has to go, but how would that change the current makeup of this team and everything that was done under prior ownership? This season would still have the same result.

i would have confidence in new ownership and i am sure you would too, if they showed hendry the door and got someone capable in here to start to clean this mess up.

The guy is a billionaire. 100M in write-offs to hasten building a championship caliber roster down the road wouldn't surprise me at all. And you can bet Hendry would not be the GM in charge of building that roster and that Crane Kenney would not be the ass kissing President of the organization or that Quade would not be in the dugout managing. We get all these bums and only one write-off: Silva.

Didnt Cuban speak to the media about how he would not be like Steinbrenner spending money if he got the team? I thought that I heard Dan mentioned that before on B&B but I have no idea if it is true or just speculation by BernStine.

edit: I found this story saying he is glad he didnt buy the team at the price it sold for. http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/n ... id=4903558

I just don't understand how things would be different if there was a different regime in place.

Is a different owner going to eat the $100+ million that is still owed to Soriano? Is a different owner going to eat all the money that's tied up in other bad contracts?

Is a different GM going to magically move all of these terrible contracts that nobody wants?

Is a different manager going to turn this team of bad players into winners?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, i'd like some of what you're smoking. I agree Hendry should be gone, nobody is arguing that. But besides that, what would possibly change the makeup of the organization RIGHT NOW, that would be any different than what we currently have?

What is disconcerting to many Cubs fans is the fact that we have an owner seemingly more concerned with profits and debt servicing than winning. Keeping Hendry et al (i.e. the status quo) and not firing them at minimum while also not articulating a vision for the present and the future leaves many fans pissed off. And frankly, it's already showing in attendance. They will probably still get their 3M this year, but I guarantee that you will see the fans booing some of these guys off the field whien they fail to perform. The big test will be in '12 when alot of this money is off the books and I just don't have the confidence in Hendry/Kenney/Ricketts to reallocate this money into constructing a winning team. I hope I am wrong but I don't see it. I see a penny pinching ownership group to cheap to even dramatically upgrade the workout facilities for the players to help improve this years team.

Damn shame.

that is a huge thing to discount, hendry has been the gm since june 5th 2002..he is personally accountable for every man on this roster. that is why i hate ricketts..it is such a an obvious move to rid your team of that fool day 1.

I heard on one of the cubs-astros broadcasts that the the astros are for sale. Watch Cuban end buying that team...within the same division as the Cubs....and then we would be able to compare ownership for years to come.

Exactly. If Ricketts doesnt fire Hendry and Crane Kenney once these bad contracts fall off then you can blast him for being an idiot.

Cuban knew that the old school MLB owners were against him owning a team & one of the reasons they were against him, besides the fact that he isn't a stuff shirt like the rest of these clowns, is that he has a ton of money & usually isn't afraid to spend it. Cuban was trying to convince the other owners that he would be frugal, since the last thing the other owners want is another guy who spends money like George.
I seriously doubt that Cuban would have been a passive complacent owner like Ricketts has been thus far.

The only thing other management might have done is fire Hendry. It probably wouldn't make the team any better or worse, but it at least might have gotten a lot of the Cubs fans on their side. Imagine how many threads bigfan would have started praising the new ownership if they canned ol Jimmy right away?

Grabow's back loaded contract pays him over 5M this year. The shocking thing is there is no 3rd year mutual option for another 5M with a 1M buyout. Hey Hendry must be learning!

It's honestly right up there with wanting to change closers by tax day as well. Let the season breathe a bit on both accounts
