Dale Earnhardt Jr. was in one hell of a giving mood last night -- dude bought drinks for more than 800 people who walked into his North Carolina bar.

It all went down at the Whisky River bar in Charlotte -- which is owned by the NASCAR stud. We're told Dale decided to pick up the tab for every drink ordered in his place between 8-9pm.

Bartender Shawn Southern -- who was also on VH1's "Tool Academy" -- says the bill was "a ridiculous amount of money" ... but Dale made sure to treat the staff to a "very generous" tip.

He has now earned his place into southern lore.

The only other NASCAR driver to make the list was Jeff Gordon, Earnhardt’s teammate at Hendrick Motorsports. Gordon fell form 14th in 2008 to 21st in 2009 with combined earnings of $20,944,140.

Hendrick has tried everything to get Junior on track & keep him there but nothing has worked. I wonder how much more patience Hendrick will have waiting for Junior to mature & win races & stop making mental mistakes?

"I'm hoping this kind of racing goes away fast so we don't have to talk about this no more," Earnhardt said Saturday before going out to qualify for Sunday's Aaron's 499. "This is a mess. This is a bunch of crap. Y'all don't look at it and think it's strange? “

But "just finding somebody to push and just push them" isn't the way Junior likes to race at Talladega. He'd like to see two-car packs wind up being a fad like Pet Rocks and mood rings.

"I think everybody thinks it's cool now because it's new and it's neat," Earnhardt said. "Everybody's getting a big kick out of it. But over the long haul, man, it's not the best. It's not as good as 40 dudes in one pack, racing like hell, trying to get to the front. It's nowhere near as good as that.

"Give me that any day over this. Over the long haul, people will realize that. Once the newness of this wears off, how interesting this is and how unique it is, I think people will start to see."

He is having a hell of a year and you have to believe that victory is not to far behind. Extremely consisitent on all kinds of tracks and he and his pit crew haven't found a way to fuck it up yet. Hail, Hail to Dale.
