what the fuck? there's a doctor who thread on the CSFMB?! be warned: i'm about to babble cuz this is my favorite show on television.
yeah it sucks for dear miss sladen.... i had written a couple paragraphs with my thoughts on her but who cares? she's dead and i got into doctor who via the new series so watching the old stuff is like watching a taped theatrical performance, which is essentially what it was. blah blah blah blah blah RIP lizzy, you did the british "carry on" thing well, tho i hope you let russell T Davies and julie gardner and the other producers know that you could drop dead, otherwise they might have to make a mad dash back to katy manning, peel her off of the dalek, throw some clothes on her, and make it The Jo Jones Adventures. who cares?
AHEM.
ANYWAYS, who's psyched for the new series starting on saturday?! this season BBC america is going to air the episodes the same day as they do in england (i think it's on @ 7pm here in chi), and from from what i've gleamed about this upcoming series it looks like it's the truth.
and you know what's fucked up? series 5 really hasn't stood the test of time for me, even though i think matt smith is an infinitely better doctor than david tennant.
TANGENT: as time wears on, I realize that I'm growing to loathe david tennant as the doctor. Once I read someone describe most of series 4's episodes as going through a virtual checklist of things that tennant does well, and it included the staredown, the "NOT WHILE I'M HERE"! the saying "weeeeeeeellllll" him screaming "DOE-NAAAAAA" (which replaced the MAAAARTHAAAA!!! of series 3) and he'd have his bug-eyed glare and all that... the blue suit... WAAAHHH I'M THE LAST OF THE TIMELORDS AND I LOVE ROSE TYLER!!
i first really got into the show in 2008 when channel 11 had just gotten the rights to air series 2, so they did a big ole marathon of series 1 and I managed to catch every episode all in one proper sitdown. It was truly magical cuz I fell in love with the show right then and there, and thus, Christopher Eccleston is my doctor. He didn't play it over the top eccentric, he didn't do the angry god / last of the timelords / SUPERHERO DAVID TENNANT (who nowadays reminds people that he was the doctor in interviews! ha!) stuff, and i mean like, obviously i love the show and it's right there amongst my favorites, but it's like reading this msgboard and then listening to, say, Laurence Holmes after you read everyone talking shit about them. The next time you see the subject matter you're like "oh shit they're right" and then came Matt Smith and that just killed it for me.
Matt Smith is wholly superior to tennant as the doctor. Whereas Tennant played him like a superhero with quirks, Matt Smith plays a more genuinely alien character. I don't know how much of the mannerisms are writing versus his performance, but he comes off as a more whimsical and likeable doctor than Tennant's lonely god portrayal. The fucked up thing I mentioned earlier is that like, short of the Lodger I don't even really want to see any other series 5 episodes... they're all just kind of... errrrgh. The writing for Amy is shit (but actually, it took me quite a long time to figure out that she actually talked. sensory overload =) and like, they did that whole cracks in the universe thing and I hobbled through some blah episodes to get to the resolution and it was, quoting Moffat, wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff.
This time around I hope they've hit their groove. It's year 2 of the new regime, they had to cut out some producers and shuffle personnel... last season was also unfulfilling because it didn't resolve anything, it just pushed it back to this year... what's interesting too is i think this year's episode #4 was written by Neil Gaiman (the comic book dude who wrote/drew/etc the sandman, amongst others) and If i'm not mistaken it was supposed to be done last year, but then they pushed it back and tossed in teh Lodger, which introduced the "Lodger Tardis" which has been spotted in the official trailer for series 6.
This year has such an intriguing plot setup I'm really really hoping it delivers the best series since series 1. I think Matt's going to be able to showcase some of this Doctor's dark side, they'll prolly drag out river's identity for awhile, and with a couple of the plot devices I know that are coming up, even without knowing the specifics... yeah. this series really should deliver... no little giggly goofy little baby aliens made of human fat waving at you as they run out of your house (so then everyone can say "oh it's a kids show, you know, don't forget that!") i'm thinking this time around there's going to be some serious shit for the doctor to deal with, and like, yeah... just yeah. i've been waiting a long time to see these episodes... the only thing i haven't been able to figure out is that over the last few months there were rumors that BBC is going to air episode 1 on saturday night and episode 2 on sunday night, which would be real as fuck cuz the opening story is a 2-episode 1 and there's a cliffhanger and then shit gets setup for the season, so hopefully not having to wait a week to see the first story will work out.
WOOOOO!!!!
I tell you what, if you guys actually watch the new show, I'll make a Doctor Who thread for saturday... I'd love to hear what you lot have to say about it! BBC America has been pumping out Doctor Who commercials all over local cable lately, whereas last year you just saw some ads on buses and in magazines and stuff... Maybe they know that they're actually sitting on the best series of Nu-Who and they're gonna make their big move to get it over in america? I should start losing weight just in case they ever decide to do an American Doctor Who =D
