Goodfellas and Casino were biographical as told to the writer by the lead character. You expect lies, embellishments and pieces of information left out when a man is telling a story from his perspective.

So you think characters in works of fiction always act rationally? If so....

No, but when the story is told from the writer's pov the world in which the character exhists should be logical.

As an example, if I was casting my me in a movie I would have a good looking guy who was well endowed for the frequent love making scenes. If a director was casting my life Paul Giamatti would play his role and never get more naked than a short sleeved t-shirt.

What would you say are his top 3 movies? I'm sure Raging Bull and Goodfellas are probably in anybody's, and then it's a toss up between "Taxi Driver" and "King of Comedy". I may be forgetting a great one though...those come to mind first.

I thought the same thing. If that is true why did he need to send her the CD after going on the lam?

He didn't send her the CD. It was addressed to Matt Damon's character, but she saw the return address and opened the envelope.

I would also say that a lot of Beardown's "logical flaws" aren't really flaws at all--like Leo smashing the guy with the bottle. That was just him trying to prove he's really a criminal to Nicholson's guys. Other "flaws" are easily explained, too.

Ok the bottle thing was just more of a question. Your answer makes sense. The other flaws are legite however.

I think improbability is a better word for it than flaw.

A flaw is you seeing the shrink in her underwear scene and not thinking she is hot. An improbability is the shrink banging two guys from the same graduating class on the police force who occasionally work in the same building with no one else knowing about it.

He wasn't in color of money. Paul Newman was the co-star.

What was in the envolpe Carstigan gave to the shrink? They made a big deal out of it and then never revealed it's contents.

I assumed that it was something to the effect of: If I die, get this info to Wahlberg's character - the only cop who knows the whole story and someone I can trust.

(Woodridge Ryan) This movie isn't even Scorcese's top 3 best films. Will be odd if this is the one that gets him his oscar.

Don't you love how hollywood uses women. She really was of no importance to the movie. Other then putting in the sex scene and having something for the characters in the movie to bang. That's the case in so many movies. The women is never needed other then eye candy for the audience in alot of these movies. Plus, this one wasn't even that hot. They could have chose a better one.

I think she was in the movie for the whole "the baby's not yours, Matt Damon." effect.

I understand the flaws. There's no way Jack doesn't figure out Leo's a cop right away. I thought it was great and very well acted. Alec Baldwin was awesome, too.

I'm sorry. I just didn't even see half of those performances as being that great. Hey, look at me, I'm Mark Wahlberg! I say "fuck" a lot so that shows my character.

And I can't ever remember thinking Baldwin was great in it. I like him in almost anything, but he was just there again. I don't know. Nothing captivated me. Probably more of the script and dialogue's fault more than anything else.

I still can't get over the fact that Nicholson's character is this great criminal mastermind, but a new guy who used to be a cop (and they know this) comes in for six months (i think thats how long) who has NOTHING to lose (he mentioned this) can't be sniffed out by him? I just can't get behind this character. He was flawly drawn up. To me, his idiocy while being so successful is the most improbable thing of the entire movie.

To answer your question Zach:

1. Goodfellas
2. Taxi Driver
3. Raging Bull
4. The Aviator
5. Gangs of New York
6. The Departed (I did love the way this movie was shot and obviously Scorcese played a big role in that. And edited...not so much his turf..)
7. Cape Fear
8. The Color of Money
9. The King of Comedy

Finally gave it a second viewing last night. I'm not backing down, it was phenomenal. All of these "flaws" that are listed on the board are addressed in subtle ways throughout the movie...

Mean Streets, anyone? Or, for something different, try After Hours.

Just watched the flick again last night, and if nothing else, it's entertaining. I giggled silently to myself every time someone used the phrase "my guy", though. And now I've got that f'n Dropkick Murphys song stuck in my head.

Casino doesn't make your list Ryan? I agree with your top 3 though. Also glad to see you give props to The Aviator. Fantastic movie.

The missing part that bothered me most was some kind of a scene to evidence that Costello provided support to the newly minted officer Sullivan. When he walked into that apartment he was about to rent, before the scene even developed, I uttered (rather loudly) "How the f-k do you afford a place like this on a new cop's salary?"

He said "I have a co-signer" and I think that was all that needed to be said to show that he was getting money from Costello. Plus, right at graduation from the academy, he went in his car and got a box from him.

Gangs of New York? It may have been the worst movie I have ever seen, but that is a discussion for another thread.

Just watched this tonight, I'm about a year behind on movies, I've got kids.

Anyway, I thought it was pretty good and I agree with the sentiment in this thread that DiCaprio should have been sniffed out immediately as a rat when they found out about it. But, if you can suspend that the movie was pretty decent.

The main reason I wanted to post though was to mention how hard it is to read an old thread now that Coach and his 4000 posts have been deleted. If you figure that Coach spent just 1 minute thinking about each post, that's about 3 days of Coach's life he'll never get back.
