On Christmas Day, two sources that are very close to recruiting at prominent universities confirmed that Jim Tressel will no longer be the head football coach at Ohio State University after the Sugar Bowl against Arkansas.

Ohio State was rocked by the suspensions of five key players, including top running back Dan "Boom" Herron and Heisman-hopeful quarterback Terrelle Pryor, for the first five games of the 2011 season earlier this week.

The sources indicated that Buckeye recruits have been informed that Tressel will not be back as coach, and have been allowed to look for other options.

Ohio State has one of the largest compliance departments in the country, yet they have reported 375 violations to the NCAA from 2000-2009, the most in the country.

Early in Tressel's tenure at OSU he had to deal with the Maurice Clarrett debacle, and Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith was suspended for two games for accepting money from a booster. The latest violations are just another dark page in the recent history of the Buckeye program.

This is major news in the college football world, especially after the University of Miami made a coaching change immediately after the regular season. The thought that Tressel would be out of a job before Rich Rodriguez at Michigan is also astounding.

Where the Buckeyes go to find a replacement is anyone's guess. Would TCU coach Gary Patterson become a possibility? The number of professional jobs that could come available in early January could cloud the hiring process in Columbus.

The OSU message boards are laughing at this report. They made a good point too: if the recruits have been told this, why have there been no 'de-commits' yet?

The1Tab Tab Bamford
@skjensen: from what I've been told by two very well placed sources, it's true. OSU recruits are shopping right now

I will say on this story, I will beleive it when it's true, I could see the thought, but I imagine Tressel would retire than being let go, especially with the record against Michigan.

It's not true.

Moral of the story: don't believe anyone who writes for Bleacher Report. Ever. Ever ever ever.

I know Urban Meyer maybe a liar when talks about things, like saying he's quitting the Gators to spend time with his family, then signs with ESPN about the next day.

Does Ohio State make a call to him to see if he would want the job, like now. I heard Pete Fiutak bring this up on the SCORE, and I could see it happen, because it almost sounds like the Tressel story could be getting worse.

ESPN just reported that Ohio State will face the severe of penalties.

An ESPN report, so may not happen, but I wonder if it will be like USC and maybe no bowl games.

If ESPN is reporting something negative about anyone, then it must be true. They would never go with a story like this unless they were absolutely certain.

I've stayed away from these Tressel stories, but I really can't avoid them any more. I originally thought there was no way in hell he'd be gone. It seemed like an innocent transgression, but the media is giving this some serious air time. With guys like Spielman and Herbstreit suggesting that Tressel really did royally screw himself... seems like McSweatervest might indeed be gone. I still think all of this is kinda silly. I don't think he should go.

The more I read about this scandal at Ohio State, the more I think the NCAA will really lower the boom on the Buckeye football program with big time sanctions. Much like they did to the Memphis basketball program a few years ago, the NCAA will completely erase OSU's on-field record, reduce scholarships & the school likely will be banned from going to bowl games for several years. I've also got to think Jim Tressel's a dead duck as head coach, regardless of what he's done vs. Michigan in their annual grudge match.

Does that mean Iowa wins the Big Ten in 2009-2010?

Nope... when you lose to Northwestern, you shouldn't claim that it was anything but a horrible horrible year. ;)

He played ineligible players and simply lied about it to the NCAA.....Get out of that Purple Bubble.....Ohio State is in deep shit....U.S.C. style...thanks to Tressel and his lying to the NCAA.

I am starting to wonder, we get a story that's not good for the Buckeyes every other week, what will it take for Ohio State to fire Tressel.

I think whoever who bring in will still get the top recruits, and should still get to the big bowl games, and could get some more national championships.

I think OSU is looking at a "lack of institutional control" charge once more stuff is announced and that's the end of Tressel.

The Zoo...and the Easton mall. They had the original Wendy's but they closed it down while I was living there.
What's sad, is that I'd move back there in a heartbeat even with the idiotic OSU fans.
