that was pretty cool. Davis' song at the end of ep. 5 was pretty sweet too. sad about the restaurant chick.

I guess I was wrong about Sonny and the violin girl.

sweet story tang with the sax.

btw: i'm having a very difficult time telling if the music is actually played live or if it is overdubbed.
it sounds like it is real. what do you think Zack? some of it has to be...but, is all of it?

This has developed into one of my favorite programs on TV. I will be sad to see
it go after the season finale this weekend. Anyone see last weeks episode? Anyone
have any thoughts on John Goodman's character and what he may or may not have
done there at the end? Would hate to see him leave the show, his character has
kind of grown on me.

I watched the latest episode last night. Goodman was definitely showing some weird signs all throughout the episode, but Im thinking they are just trying to throw everyone off. Who knows....

I hope he isn't off the show. His character is one of my favorites.

Pretty much my thoughts as well, just trying to throw people off but he was definitely acting
suicidal. Only thing was we didn't hear a big splash so that makes me wonder. Dude is living
large these days and he definitely would have displaced some water if he had hopped overboard.

yeah...i thought that was odd as well with Goodman.

my guess with goodman's character is that he can't accept what new orleans has become after all the devastation. as if his livelihood went with it. the scenes with the freshman class explain "the awakening" well enough...but i don't think they were really necessary. him in front of his computer not being able to put together his thoughts anymore is clear enough that he just feels lost.

i don't know that he's dead; but he may have "disappeared".

really liked this last episode. i wonder what happened to the fiddler, since she said she had a gig. did she get rained on, too?

i'm looking forward to the season finale. i've read that it's already been green lit for a second season so don't worry; it's not really ending.

Was in New Orleans tre times

Then went a fourth and ended up in a place called The Maple Leaf rocking some heavy Zydeco and it was like someones big living room.

you know it was real because someone got stabbed outside!

rock on!

AND THE BEST FOOD IN THE COUNTRY! BY FAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nobody buys pre processed food and then just deep fries it. They bread everything, cook it, roast it, steam it, etc. Plus had the best meal of my life at NOLA

I was pretty sure it was coming back but sometimes HBO leaves their shows off the air for too
long in my opinion. Hopefully they will be back with another full season this winter.

Edit: Filming for season 2 begins this fall. We may not be seeing more Treme for almost
a year.

well damn "eastbound & down" has been guaranteed a second season for like 2 years and still haven't seen it yet. i think it's finally going into production this year, though.

i'm gonna ask some of my NOLA kin this weekend about how the oil spill is affecting their ability to get shit from the coast; pretty sure they're having to get most of their seafood from texas now. can't imagine what it costs to eat out down there right now.

Yeah, I almost forgot about that one. I am assuming that once McBride's career
started taking off, he was hard to get pinned down to film another season. I see
Entourage is back in another week or two as well. That show has been losing steam
for the past two seasons so I hope they can bring it back to a respectable level.

Anyone catch the season finale? I am going to watch it when I get home
after work. I read a brief review that mentions season 2 as being a flashback
to right before Katrina hits.

Parts of the finale were difficult (depressing) to watch, but it was an excellent ending. The flashbacks to pre-Katrina were bizarre at first, since I couldn't sit down & watch the first showing from beginning to end.

But when the rebroadcast came on @ 11:30, it all seemed well woven in together. (Yes, I did watch the same show 2x in one night   )

the whole episode is not a flashback...just a segment, that is really confusing at first...but then it makes sense after 15 minutes.

i thought it was good. interesting ending...looking forward to season 2.

Now I am really interested. I will hold off making any more comments until I see it
in about 45 minutes.

Really powerful final episode to season 1. Definitely had a depressing tone to it
and I thought about it for a good 20 minutes afterwards. Can't wait for next
season likely spring of 2011. Apparently John Goodman is listed as a member of
the cast for next season so maybe they will flashback completely to show events
before the storm. This has been a great show and makes me want to go back and
watch all of The Wire in the meantime. Acting, music and direction has been a joy
to watch.

One of the storylines I was completely intrigued by was that of the Indians.
I finally got around to looking up a little bit more on the tradition and thought
I would pass it along for those interested in learning more about it. Explains
a bit more about the Indian scene in the final episode. (Sorry for length, but
it is interesting )

"Mardi Gras Indians are secretive because only certain people participated in masking - people with questionable character. In the old day, the Indians were violent; Indians would meet on Mardi Gras, it was a day to settle scores." - Larry Bannock, President, New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian Council.

Mardi Gras is full of secrets and the Mardi Gras Indians are as much a part of that secret society as any other carnival organization. The Mardi Gras Indians are comprised, in large part, of the blacks of New Orleans' inner cities. They have paraded for well over a century...yet their parade is perhaps the least recognized Mardi Gras tradition.

"Mardi Gras Indians--the parade most white people don't see. The ceremonial procession is loose, the parade is not scheduled for a particular time or route...that is up to the Big Chief." - Larry Bannock

Typical Mardi Gras organizations will form a "krewe." A krewe often names their parade after a particular mythological hero or Greek god. The ranking structure of a Mardi Gras Krewe is a parody of royalty: King, Queen, Dukes, Knights and Captains...or some variation on that theme. Many more established Krewes allowed membership by invitation only.

Few in the ghetto felt they could ever participate in the typical New Orleans parade. Historically, slavery and racism were at the root of this cultural separation. The black neighborhoods in New Orleans gradually developed their own style of celebrating Mardi Gras. Their "Krewes" are named for imaginary Indian tribes according to the streets of their ward or gang.

The Mardi Gras Indians named themselves after native Indians to pay them respect for their assistance in escaping the tyranny of slavery. It was often local Indians who accepted slaves into their society when they made a break for freedom. They have never forgotten this support.

In the past, Mardi Gras was a violent day for many Mardi Gras Indians. It was a day often used to settle scores. The police were often unable to intervene due to the general confusion surrounding Mardi Gras events in the city...where the streets were crowded and everyone was masked. This kept many families away from the "parade," and created much worry and concern for a mother whose child wanted to join the "Indians."

"'I'm gonna mask that morning if it costs me my life!' That morning you pray and ask God to watch over you, cause everybody is bucking for number one." - Larry Bannock

Today when two Mardi Gras Indian tribes pass one another, you will see a living theater of art and culture. Each tribe's style and dress is on display...in a friendly but competitive manner, they compare one another's art and craftsmanship.

The greeting of the Big Chiefs of two different tribes often starts with a song, chant, ceremonial dance, and threatening challenge to "Humba"--the Big Chief's demand that the other bow and pay respect. The retort is a whoop and equally impressive song and war dance with the reply, "Me no Humba, YOU Humba!"

"You know when you've won, you see it in their eyes." - Larry Bannock

Although there was a history of violence, many now choose to keep this celebration friendly. Each Big Chief will eventually stand back and, with a theatrical display of self-confidence, acknowledge the artistry and craftsmanship of the other's suit.

Before the progression can continue, the two Big Chiefs will often comment privately to one another, "Looking good Baby, looking good!"

"After Mardi Gras, you thank GOD that you made it." - Larry Bannock

Mardi Gras is no longer a day to "settle scores" among the Mardi Gras Indians. Violence is a relic of the past. It is now Mardi Gras tradition and practice for the Indians to simply compare their tribal song, dance and dress with other tribes as they meet that day. Each Indian has invested thousands of hours and dollars in the creation of his suit, and is not willing to risk ruining it in a fight. This tradition, rich with folk art and history, is now appreciated by museums and historical societies around the world. It is a remarkable and welcome change from the past.

The history and culture of the Mardi Gras Indians is a significant part of Mardi Gras and New Orleans - yet until now, it has been the least appreciated and least understood. We hope you enjoy reading about it as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you! We thank the Mardi Gras Indian Council for opening their history books, and sharing their history and traditions with us!

The New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian Council was formed in 1987 to help preserve and enrich the Indian Culture. In August of 1992, the Big Chiefs of each of the major tribes gathered together for a historic celebration of unity. The event, christened "Glad Yu Kum", was commemorated with a fine art painting by New Orleans artist Mark Andresen. Planet Publishing created the limited edition lithographic poster seen above directly from the original piece. One hundred percent of the proceeds from sales goes directly to the New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian Council to maintain and preserve this unique culture.

i love how smartly written this show. the finale and premiere both begin with a procession, and it's all about moving on. celebrating and grieving...the whole first season is just in tune with itself. it was a great finale. guess i should've seen the goodman thing coming. great character though.

even at 84 minutes this episode really breezed by because there was so much happening. very good stuff. and my god did i crave some beignets and poboys after watching it.

me too...I need to go back.

I really hope we don't have a Hero's flashback season 2. That would sorta suck.

btw: I'm convinced that 90% of the music we hear is "real."
Kermit Ruffins is an actual NOLA musician..

For fans of this program, Season 2 starts in April. I'll update again when I have
more info. Pretty sure they are running reruns of season 1 if you want to try
to refresh and catch up on storylines. Looking forward to this coming back.
Not for certain but I think they are going to flash back to before Katrina for
more backstory during part of this next season.

Yeah, that makes sense. I heard John Goodman signed on to do a second season. I'm looking forward to the next season.

After a little more digging it appears it will be back April 24th. This happens to
be one week after the debut of "Game Of Thrones" so it appears they will
run one after another on HBO Sunday nights. Kind of a weird combo but
should make for 2 hours of quality TV. I know nothing of "Thrones" but there
is a lot of buzz about that series.

I power watched this show via On Demand last week when I was off. It's pretty good. I like the opening credits with the water lines and mold on the walls and that theme song is catchy. Steve Zahn tends to annoy me but his character isn't that bad. The two guys from The Wire are the best characters but I thought the best story of the first season was about the one woman's brother who was lost in the penal system. I'm half hoping John Goodman's character turns up later this season after having been living amongst the people of New Orleans on the street as part of a middle class guilt cleansing ritual. Was it just me or was it not made clear they recovered his body?

I assumed the body washed up but I would have to watch it again. All I remember for sure is
that the guy working the ship admitted seeing a big guy on the boat one minute and the next
he was gone. Pretty sure we'll be seeing Goodman and more of the back story in future episodes.
