Let's not get carried away here, either. If the supporting cast were so solid, Memphis wouldn't be such a piss poor team. I like a few of those guys, but the rest of them are no more special than your average NBA bench. Rudy G has a chance to be good, I'll give you that one. Mike Miller? 6th man. He's not a dominant NBA shooting guard. Hakim Warrick is a high flyer that doesn't rebound. It's not that he has a bad attitude or anything; he just happens to have less muscle mass than George Ofman. Johnson was a nice 2nd round pickup for them (most expected he would get picked in round 1). He and Lawrence Roberts do a pretty solid job on the glass, but neither player has what you would call a big upside. They are Chris Duhons at the PF position: a pleasant surprise, but still, you're not foolish yourself. Kyle Lowry, I like him a lot actually, but don't crap me - there were several PGs drafted ahead of him last June, and a few more bunched up right behind him. He's got talent, but it's no shoe-in that he's the floor leader on a playoff caliber team.

What the hell is this "we" shit? All of these guys are out on their asses once the team gets sold. Jerry West has already put his house on the market. If the GM gets canned, why would they keep his assistants around?

And for the record, Vescey is the same guy who, 30 days ago, wrote that Gasol was a goner. In fact, he said "I put this out there with utter certainty." Now, suddenly, Memphis has no interest in moving him? Sounds to me like Vecsey is serving as a mouthpiece for his old pal Jerry West. Again, 55 hours to deadline, don't believe a word you hear.

Vescey is about as right on trades as Sam Smith is, and way more arrogant...but the trade rumors are good discussion.

Rudy Burrito, LOL! That's pretty funny!

I was reading through that, and when I got to "Rudy Burrito" I literally laughed out loud. Hilarious. The best part is how the board automatically capitalizes "Burrito," giving it the appearance that it's actually the name.

Very interesting. Knowing this little bit of info, I have to agree with you. God it'd be awesome if they really are desperate to move him.

If I were Pax, I’d keep hammering away at the Gasol deal hoping they cave in. But, if that falls through, my plan B would be to call Mike D’Antoni down in Phoenix. As I mentioned yesterday, you could swap PJ for a bloated contract that expires in 07/08 (ie: Kurt Thomas), thus leaving you in the same exact position to make a big splash next year. With extensions to Boris Diaw and Leandro Barbosa kicking in next year, the Suns balloon to well over the luxury tax threshold. Given their habit of selling draft picks for cash, I’m fairly confident they have no interest in the dollar for dollar tax that they face next year, meaning that Kurt Thomas’ $8 million contract would actually cost them $16 million. Phoenix has 3 first round picks next year – one that should be in the lottery (courtesy of Atlanta, top 3 protected: Joe Johnson trade), and two late round 1 picks. I’d offer them PJ for Kurt Thomas and 1 of the late picks. It’s a win-win for both teams. Phoenix saves a ton of cash, Bulls get an extra pick (which they could potentially use to trade up a few spots assuming the Knicks stay on track for the 9-11 pick), and Pax gets a second chance (technically a 3rd chance when you count the Tim Thomas contract) to make something big happen. More importantly, the Bulls’ payroll doesn’t blow up until 2008, so they could afford to carry Kurt Thomas’ dead weight into next season.

Well, BD, your boy Shareef is getting some media play this afternoon. Might be a ploy by Pax to make Jerry West sweat, or he could really be bailing out on the Gasol sweepstakes. I don't have a big objection to picking up Rahim, but I'd much rather swing a deal with Phoenix for Kurt Thomas instead. We'll see. 20 hours to go...

I've sort of cooled on Rahim...I wanted the Bulls to go after him a few seasons ago, but the injuries, and do concern me.

I guess, if Paxson is unwilling to move any of his top 4 or 5 players, a move like this will help if he's healthy enough.

I should add that the big reason I've cooled is that it doesn't make the Bulls any better unless he starts putting up 15 and 8 every night....I think he's more likely to play 20 minutes a night, and get 6-8 points.

It would help to have some/any low post scoring, but I just can't see it making a difference as far as advancing in the playoffs.

Bulls need a legitimate big man like Gasol....

He's not what he used to be, that's for sure, but he could definitely be a decent role player for us. My only fear is the possibility of him being a bad contract for us down the road. But I'd have to believe that Pax has the go ahead, financially speaking, from Reinsdorf to move forward with something like this. No way he compromises his ability to resign Luol, Gordon, and Nocioni over somebody like Shareef.

I guess if we make a move for him, we'd have 3 dependable options in P.J. Brown (though I'd do your trade in a second, but I think Paxson will just end making one move, tops), Wallace and Rahim, and can mix in Tyrus Thomas for energy.

Here's an interesting note from SI this evening:

Meanwhile, rumors of a Zach Randolph deal for Chicago have begun to regain steam. Randolph is just the kind of low-post scorer the Bulls need, and his Michigan State background fits with coach Scott Skiles. However, his past character issues, lack of defense and big contract make it doubtful Paxson would mortgage his team's future on him. Besides, the Blazers continue to insist they aren't trading Randolph. Chicago might instead make a run at Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who has been platooning with Kenny Thomas in Sacramento.

Somebody asked Portland's GM about that and he basically laughed and said "no chance". That's fine by me. The Bulls would be taking a hell of a risk by bringing Randolph (and his contract) to Chicago. I would only consider taking that risk if it were a straight salary dump on Portland's part. Since it's not, go ahead and keep him. Plus, with the Blazers winning more games of late and them essentially being out of the Oden/Durant sweepstakes, it doesn't make a lot of sense for them to move him now.
