American Graffiti Soundtrack.... Great double disc set if you like oldies from the 50s and 60s.

Great soundtrack. I never saw this movie until about 2 years ago, and thought it was very good.

That soundtrack is probably one of the best of all time, IMO

I'm gonna assume you've never heard the Look Who's Talking Too soundtrack and leave it at that...

That was the album I was listening to when I told you but all Beck's albums are solid.

Gotta be in the right mood for jazz. Can't remember where your suggestions are.

I've given Beck a rest for the rest of the afternoon. Right now I'm listeneing to:

I hate that term. It's a genre of music that doesn't exist. I used to hate when D'Angelo and Erykah Badu were categorized that way.

Musiq had a good debut album. This one sucks...

You hate the term "Neo Soul" but you're ok with "vomiting an infant"?

The Roots are Hip Hop but they ain't my kind of Hip Hop.

I only listen to lyrical surgeons. You know...lyricists who serve more lines than a coke dealer? The Roots don't exactly do that.

But back to Neo Soul...I'm confused, Ivan. How would you categorize artists like Badu, Musiq, Kindred the Family Soul, India Arie, and Jill Scott?

I respectfully disagree with Jauncey Billups. I think some people are a little salty about the Roots becoming a late night band. I would like to know which album wouldn't be considered Hip Hop 'cause it sure as hell isn't the last one. That was greatness...

I just figured out what I don't like about them. They're just not dark enough. They're too "hope" and "inspiration". I relate better to "pain" and "torture". It's one of the reasons I loved Eminem and Pac so much, and similarly why I like Tyler the Creator now. Tyler's just all fucked up inside. That's real shit I can relate to.

I wouldn't put them all together. Some I would call R&B, some Soul. But neo soul was some made up shit that doesn't make any sense. The termwas created beause R&B sucked at the time and neo soul sounded better than "non-suck r&b"...

Anybody here a fan of Counting Crows? I hated them in '94, when my musical diet consisted of Pantera, STP, and Dr Dre. Now that I'm older I'm kinda getting into Duritz's lyrics.

I don't mind the Counting Crows. Got into them as I got a little older. They suck live, though.

All I know of them is their '94 album and I loved it. Eighth grade. It brings back good memories every time I get to hear that "Mr. Jones" lyric belted out. Seriously. I was a fan.

Doesn't neo soul just refer to a newer (not the 60s or 70s) artist that sings in a traditional soul style? Caron Wheeler comes to mind.

A lot of the artists that fall under that umbrella don't necessarily sing in a traditional style though. I think the term refers more to the production style and the backing track than vocal delivery. I could be way off, but that's just how I define it.

A friend of mine is really into them. It kinda piqued my interest, so I made a Pandora station. It sucks to hear that they suck live. That's such an important part of the experience. I like to see how music and lyrics translate live.
