The passing of Daryl Hawks comes 9 years after NBC5 said goodbye to another sports anchor/reporter, Darrian Chapman, also at a very early age. While Chapman died of a heart attack at only 37 years old preparing to play a pickup hockey game if memory serves at Johnny’s Icehouse with some friends of his in 2002, I’m not sure what happened to Hawks this morning in his Atlanta hotel room as he was preparing to report on tonight’s Game 6 of the Bulls/Hawks East Semifinal for the NBC Universal-owned station. Needless to say, both Chapman in 2002 and now Hawks died way too soon.

I was very surprised to learn of Daryl Hawks' death this morning as he was getting ready to provide live reports from Atlanta before & after Game 6 of tonight's Bulls/Hawks' East Semifinal on NBC5. I was stunned to say the least. What immediately came to mind was what happened to another NBC5 sports anchor/reporter, Darrian Chapman, who died 9 years earlier. Both guys died way too soon, and both died before age 40.
