On NBC 5 news last night someone said something like, "I hope he is remembered for being the good husband and father he was" which I took to mean he was doing something other than being a good husband and father at the time of his death.

An autopsy performed Friday was inconclusive regarding the cause of death of NBC5 lead sports anchor Daryl Hawks, who was found dead in his Atlanta hotel room Thursday.

“The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office has completed the initial phases of the postmortem examination. ...No obvious cause of death was identified,” that office said in a statement Friday.

The 38-year-old Hawks, with the station since July 2008, was discovered unresponsive in his room by hotel employees at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday after missing a wake-up call, according to the news station.

Hawks had flown to Atlanta Wednesday to cover Thursday’s Game 6 of the Bulls-Hawks NBA playoff series.

“Additional time will be required to conduct additional procedures such as microscopic examination of tissues and toxicology testing,” the medical examiner’s office said, adding it would likely be at least two weeks before any answer would be available as to how the married father of three died.

Hawks’ death left officials and staffers at NBC5 reeling, as it came nine years after another lead sports anchor, Darrian Chapman, also died suddenly, at the age of 37. Chapman had been at the station only 16 months when in October 2002 he collapsed and died while playing hockey on the Near West Side.

Hawks, of River Forest, is survived by his wife, Sandy, their children ages 5 and 2, and a teenage son from a previous relationship.
