2010-114IP minors 54 in the majors for 168IP

They must have been grooming him to be one of those popular 150+ IP a year set up men.

He was ALWAYS on the starters path. They brought him to the pen last year because just to start getting majors experience.

The way the off days work, if 1 of these guys isn't out for more than 2 weeks, they could survive with just Coleman and a 4 man rotation. If this is the direction they go I would like to see Coello called up to see what he can do out of the pen. I saw him when he was a skinny rookie league catcher for the Reds and now he is a 250 lb strikeout machine of a pitcher. If he turns out to be legit then they can shoot a harpoon up the sharks ass and send him on his way to the NFL.

yea but even YOU didnt know that until u looked him up...noone ever mentioned he was a starter in the minors...besides, most big-league relievers start out as starters in the minors...noone ever expected him to be a starter last year, he was always known to be a future solid late-inning reliever...even YOU thought that, until u just blindly ate up the sudden change in direction this spring

I'm sorry you missed the memo that they wanted Cashner to start.

They always wanted him to start and have been increasing his workload for 2 years to get him ready to start. I was aware of this fact and simply looked up the IP to help illustrate my point.

I think both of these guys are out until at least mid may. They have been completely shut down since going on the DL and are were finally re-evaluated yesterday. No word on the results of that evaluation but they should begin a throwing program this week if all went well. The throwing program can take 2-3 weeks to complete and then they would have to go to the minors for a few rehab starts before being ready to rock. I thought this would take a while with Cashner, but not as long with Wells.

Wells could only play catch from 60 ft today while Cash is threw 40 pitches from 60 ft. They are looking at maybe being back late may early june now. I sure as hell better not see that stupid bullpen day shit again when we know these guys are out for a long time.

Well shit.

Wells is doing good at least. He will be starting for Iowa sometime this week.

And for the rest of the season.

Is Doug Davis the savior of the Cubs? A fan’s take

On Saturday, May 14, journeyman pitcher Doug Davis made his first major league start in nearly a year. While it would be terribly unreasonable, paranoid and unfair to say that the Cubs' season was riding on Davis' 35-year-old, surgically repaired left arm, for paranoid Cubs fans like me, it kind of felt like it did.

Sure, the Cubs are only four games under .500 after their series with the world champion San Francisco Giants but with serious injuries on the back-end of the rotation to Randy Wells(notes) and Andrew Cashner(notes) and the astonishing ineffectiveness of James Russell(notes) and Casey Coleman(notes) in spot starts, things on the back-end of the Cubs' rotation have grown quite worrisome.

It's not just the injuries and the ineffectiveness that has stoked the fears of Cubs fans. The Cubs are legendarily the unluckiest team in baseball, and the bad luck this season has included a pair of pitchers announcing their retirement without throwing a 2011 pitch. Neither Todd Wellemeyer or Braden Looper were expected to be a savior but either one could have out-pitched James Russell, who rarely made it out of the fourth inning in his five starts.

The injuries and the retirements only serve to stoke an already edgy fan base that continues to chafe over not having played in a World Series in more than 60 years and not won a World Series in more than 100 years. It's fair to speculate that a perfectly healthy Randy Wells or Andrew Cashner were not the keys to a World Series but this is not about rational analysis but fan hopes and dreams.

This is the arena that Doug Davis walked into on Saturday, May 14, against the Giants and with five effective innings and giving up just one earned run, Davis helped Cubs fans breathe a little easier for a day. Yes, the Cubs went on to lose on Saturday in a rain-shortened game, 3-0, but it wasn't Davis' fault. Is that enough to call Doug Davis the savior of the Cubs' season? Of course not, but that won't stop us Cubs fans expecting much more from the 35-year-old journeyman.

We are, after all, the same fans who believe a Billy Goat has kept us out of the World Series and the fans who count a hug between our general manager and another team's star player as their biggest win of the season. Unrealistic expectations are really the only expectations that make any sense to us.

Wells pitched for Peoria instead of going straight to Iowa. I think he went about 3.2 and pitched 48. Sounds like he looked good and will get another start somewhere with a higher pitch count. Probably 2 more rehab starts and he will be ready. I'm not sure what this means for the 4 lefties in the pen as I had originally assumed Marshall was getting turned into a starter....but with Wells back and Davis still there and serviceable this hopefully means grabow is out the fucking door.

Wells next start is in Iowa, so I think we'll see him back here after that. Probably with an 80 or so pitch count I'd bet, but that's better than whatever Coleman does

Grabow isn't going anywhere unless he gets "injured". They probably demote Coleman.
