My wife loves sushi. However, since having become mysteriously allergic to shellfish (during a pregnancy), it's not worth the anxiety to go to a sushi restaurant and chance that a chef uses the same knife on shellfish, then tuna (she's REALLY allergic).

It has recently come to our attention that there's apparently such a thing as kosher sushi, where shellfish is not allowed (no idea why though). We'd really like to find a kosher sushi restaurant as we'd like to be able to go out for anxiety-free sushi once again.

Anyone know of this? Anyone know of any places like that?

Isn't Shallot's the go-to place for kosher around Chicago?

Btw, it's not kosher, but Renga-tei on Touhy @ Crawford has great sushi at decent prices.
You could probably sit at the sushi bar and explain to the chef the situation and they'll likely accomodate. As most any sushi joint would, esp during slow hours.

Sushi Loop in the West Loop is an off-the-path a bit sushi place run by an extremely nice couple. The husband's almost always the only sushi chef working and would likely be happy to make sure no shellfish cross-pollination occurs.

We have a few favorite places, but there's always a translation issue in talking with the staff/chefs. And my wife is REALLY allergic. If they use the same knife or even gloves to handle shellfish, then our stuff, she'll break out.

I've ordered take out sushi for her from Sea Ranch here in Evanston (great place by the way) but I basically had to stand over the chefs and ensure that they changed gloves and knifes and boards. It's just a huge hassle for everyone involved. When she heard of this kosher thing, she got excited at the prospect of being able to go to a sushi bar again.

You should have told her that kosher sushi is made up, there is no such thing!

Problem solved

Unless you're trying to kill her and get the insurance money

I'm not sure about all this. Weren't the Japs aligned with the Krauts in WWII?

There's a place that recently opened at Dodge/California and Howard called Hamachi. It's kosher sushi.

My wife and I just ate there tonight and it was really good. Very fresh fish and great presentation.

It was a little expensive for my tastes, but not insanely so.

It's a tiny space with maybe 6 tables and some seating at the sushi bar. It was jam packed. They seem to do a very healthy take-out business.

I give it 5 out of 6 chopsticks.

Cream cheese , salmon and chives. Some places call it Philly Roll? Sounds like a bagel to me though
