It's been fun talking to people about Savage who actually grew up, and don't watch wrestling. It's amazing the impact he had on the yut of the 80's.

Both matches were great, but I would say that Steamboat and Savage was the best match. It is not just Savage's best match, but one of the greatest matches all time.

Warrior and Savage was the greatest match Warrior ever had. But that is what makes guys like Savage so great is they can get in the ring and have a great match with a broomstick. There was nothing that Savage could not do.

He was one of the first guys in wrestling that I truly hated as a kid. When he hit Steamboat with the timekeeper's bell I thought I was going to be sick I was so upset. Then as I got older I was able to look back and see that was part of the reason he was so great. He captivated the audience and got you to respond to everything he did.

The build up, the story arc, the length, the amount of nearfalls and the venue make Steamboat-Savage the easy call for me.


Warrior Savage was cool to me, because each guy kept kicking out of the others finisher. Other than the suspense aspect, I dont remember it being all that great.

I went to Wrestlemania II at the Rosemant Horizon in '86. At least I think it was number two. Anyway, we had seats on the first row of the second section. There was this annoying little balck guy ringside, who had a shirt made up with Crotcho Man ironed on the front and back.
I don't seem to remember the Macho Man being a part of the show, but I digress. He spent the whole show running back and forth, annoying the participants. He was a hoot. I think it was Ronnie Woo Woo, although I have never been able to verify my suspicions.

Vince had the brilliant idea to have WM at 3 different locations that year. Macho was busy battling everybody's favorite green tongued English teacher George the Animal at the Nassau Coliseum.

Savage was an icon. Best promo guy in the '80s. Better than Piper, better than Hogan. More athletic than them, too.

I really wonder what Hogan has to say about Savage's passing, haven't seen anything on it yet.

Former TNA X Division Champion Jay Lethal wrote the following tribute to the late Randy Savage. Lethal received Savage's blessings a few years back to perform as "Black Machismo" in TNA.

Bill Simmons just wrote a tribute column. Before i read it I can honestly say his death didn't effect me any more than some other random famous dude. Now I actually feel genuinely sad this happened.

I fully understand the criticisms of Simmons but this is a good example of his exceptional talent to have the above effect on a subject.

I really have no idea how relevant this statement within that given paragraph is when it comes to amtrue wrestling fans perspective. I really have never come close to caring about even having a somewhat serious conversation about pro wrestling, But it, along with the Birdman/freshman in college anecdote is a very simply, effective way of explaining my previous post and a great example of great "sports" writing today as long as we aren't holding everyone to Grantland Rice criteria

i read the article. i agree, it was very heartfelt and the anecdote was really what stuck with me. i still roll my eyes at the sports comparisons he does (this was the lakers/celtics of...) because it just gets old and predictable.

but as far as justifying himself, AND giving credit to someone who was a superstar for that sprot, the article was spot on. and his line about macho man being the 80's was perfect.
