Nope. Rory is human again. He came back after Big Bang II.

Holy shit, I'd bang the shit out of miss Sexy the TARDIS. Suranne Jones is the goods, as she's got that traditional english woman face along with a pair of magnanimous knockers that scream out "GET HERE BEFORE I'M 45 AND GRAVITY WINS IT'S EPIC WAR WITH MY SEXUALITY!!!!@"

Although, much like reading this board I've been partially spoiled to NuWho. There's this guy Lawrence Miles who wrote a few books for the New Adventures and Eighth Doctor Adventures series back in the late 90s / early 00s. Evidently, he used to be friendly with current-head-showrunner Steven Moffat back when the lifeforce of Doctor Who was contained within the works of "Professional Fanfiction" authors like themselves who did their best to continue on the legacy of Doctor Who through the BBC novels and Big Finish Audiobooks.

Lawrence has been blogging about Doctor Who since the series came back, and holy shit, this guy LOVES Doctor Who. Aside from writing those adventure novels, he also wrote a giant reference/review/essay book about the Jon Pertwee era called "About Time" which is one of the ultimate labours of love in the history of Doctor Who. He's a brilliant writer who goes off on these fascinating tangents and diatribes about the show, and like, he's been perhaps the most prolific critic of the show ever since he claims that it took a turn from being-for-the-fans to being-for-the-BAFTA-judges right around the time time of the last story of Season 3, Utopia/The Sound of the Drums/Last of the Time Lords.

He's got a blog over @ http://beasthouse-lm2.blogspot.com/ which is a fascinating read, in fact, it is to Doctor Who as this board is to Chicago Sports Talk Radio... or better yet, it's like seeing the arrow in the FedEx logo: once you see it, you can never unsee it. This guy dissects the series like few other, and thus his position in contemporary Doctor Who fandom causes a schism. Some people love him and think that he's perhaps the greatest critic of NuWho out there, citing a love of his books, which by most accounts (even his detractors) are at the very least very good, if not excellent. Then, there's the people who affectionately refer to him as "Mad Larry" and write him off as a bitter jealous and jaded hater of all people associated with the revived Doctor Who series, because while many of the pool of writers whore wrote for the NA/EDA series "graduated" into writing episodes for the new series, if not writing novels for the revived line of episode-novelizations and contemporary 9th-11th Doctor adventures, "Mad Larry" has been left out. It seems that Lawrence is indeed quite brilliant, but horribly caustic and all about burning bridges wherever he goes, thus killing his chances of getting into the fraternity of writers and producers who work on a bigtime british television show like Doctor Who.

Once again, the blog is @ beasthouse-lm2.blogspot.com/ and I deeply recommend it. Before you delve into the meat and potatoes of what he writes (his writing style would make my writing seem like a masterstroke of brevity) I'd advise reading the right column that runs along the vertical length of each blog page... he's got these little picture+blurb hits that are FUCKING HILARIOUS, where he makes a list of Magic Wand devices like they're in a catalog, or he breaks out mathematical formulas to describe the writing style of steven moffat. It'll give you an idea of what you're getting into, although his actual blog posts tend to be more academic, littered with all kinds of psyche-exposing glimpses into the head showrunner Steven Moffat, dating back to the days when they were kinda-sorta-mates. In fact, Lawrence was so scathing with his criticism that Moffat, who he claims is a populist at heart and all about being loved by his fanbase, therefore he promotes a theory that these recent Series have brought forth a "fetishization" of the Doctor where, example, just invoking his name causes the enemies to run because HE IS THE DOCTOR, AND THE MERE INVOCATION OF HIS NAME IS ENOUGH TO BRING FORTH VICTORY SOMETIMES!

I dunno, I'm babbling but sir speeps and um... shoot I forget dude's name who starts with a B that likes the series.. BEEBO! Yeah! You guys will love this, once agian GO TO beasthouse-lm2.blogspot.com/ and i'm even going to send sir 'speeps a PM of it cuz that right quick-hit column alone is worth the price of admission.

SO IN SUMMARY: THE TARDIS HAS NICE TITS AND LAWRENCE MILES IS GOD! SO LONG AND THANKS FOR ALL THE FISH.

# END OF LINE.

Still an odd episode. For "old control room," I was expecting the Elizabethan controls from the Tom Baker/Leela era.

With an easy chair. And Sylvester McCoy reading a book, sitting in said chair...

Ok episode. I was expecting something epic from Neil Gaiman, but it just seemed ordinary. Maybe my fault for over-hyping it in my mind.

"Doctor arrives at faerie market. Things aren't what they seem." Heh.

I'm working on last night's episode. These things take awhile to digest. A lot more than a Russell Davis slugfest.

Interesting episode last week. Have to see the conclusion this week, but having another Doctor could be sweet.

It just seems like every episode is filler until they get back to episodes that deal with the Silence and River.

...and the little regenerating girl.
...and the death of the doctor
...and the mystery of who's in the astronaut suit
...and that weird eye-patched bitch who shows up in the walls OF EVERY GODDAMN EPISODE!
...and the whole blowing up the tardis to blow up the universe thing. WTF?!?! <len kasper> WHYYYYY??? </len kasper>
...and amy's pregnancy. is she? isn't she? why were her pictures in the fucked up orphanage?
...and then with the silence, what are they after? who's their leader/boss/etc? i'd love to see a "planet of the silence" someday.
...AND WHAT ABOUT JIM THE FISH?!??@?$@

moffat's showrunning style is clearly akin to that of a juggler, throwing up as many balls as is humanly possible and then attempting to juggle them all in such a breathtaking way that you're captivated to see if the dude can ultimately catch all of them, as opposed to like, critiquing if there's actually good form in the art of throwing the ball.

DOWN METAPHOR, DOWN BOY!

but yeah, we've got a potentially really good episode on the horizon tomorrow, which should set things up for episode 7 / (arghhh i wanna say some of the common-to-whovians hype machine stuff moffat has tossed out in interviews, but i'm not going to do it out of respect to bosco and others) but yeah, i'm definitely ready for "a good man goes to war" and the promises that moffat and others have been hinting at through all of the promotional interviews that have been going on for months now.

oh yeah, and i'm praying to god that the "spoiler" i've heard about river song's identity is NOT true and the work of moffat and some of the production staff to spread disinformation that gets purveyed by typically-spot-on posters on gallifreybase.com like timeboy. timeboy's come out and said who river is and i personally think it's utter shite and pray that he's been misled by everyone, or maybe they paid him off or something... COMEON MOFFAT YOU'RE BETTER THAN THAT!

lest we forget about the PSA from our buddy lawrence miles....

Oh yeah, and my thoughts on episode 5: the rebel flesh...

This episode can set up to either be a fascinating launching pad for some great philosophical ideas, or it can be setting up the mother of all cop-outs that would make a RTD season ender seem fine. In the middle of a series where you've got a dead future doctor and all kinds of oddities going on, introducing the concept of a doppleganger/clone doctor (and god knows who else... with the silence, this series has shown us that they'll edit the action in such a way that we're purposely left out, like in episode 2 when they put in those hand recorders and tried showing us the audience how canton everett delaware III experienced the silence when they had the hologram in the tardis)

so like, for all we know all of the primary characters are gangers right now and we've had that tsunami-shock edit come in and purposely mislead us.... so like, i hope they continue on with this potential/development in a good and intelligent manner that respects the audience, as opposed to properly copping out. lamentably, from what i've heard there very well might be some copping out heading forward, but not necessarily in a gangerish type way... but then again, i'm thinking that moffat's spoiler rant around the time the primary batch of spoilers came out for the season might be a smoke screen to cover up a bunch of disinformation they spread out to try and trick the usual spot-on spoilerhounds (you know, the people in cardiff/wales who hang out and watch filming as if they're paid to do it... teh ones providing set reports and overheard dialog from scenes as they're being filmed, etc) --- at least i hope it is.

then again, back in teh day when the "dolan script" came out that talked about the matrix 2 and 3 and basically summarized the plot of those 2 movies, many of us on the msgboards thought it to be rubbish and thought it was full of shit and no way would the future-tranny and his brother do us like that after such a great first movie... and indeed, it all came true right before our very eyes, so you never know. you hope and pray for transcendental brilliance, but remember that there is a mainstream audience and often times you're just going to get contrived straightforward drama with nice special effects, just like the matrix sequels.

altho like, having neo turn into fucking god to save trinity at teh end of the matrix 2 only to have her randomly die for no point in matrix 3 was such a pointless dick move that like, i can't believe that moffat would ever steep so low as to do anything like that.

anyways, back to the episode... blah. standard who fare, raising philosophical questions about the nature of what is to be alive and etc, but like, the one thing i couldn't get over is how nasty sarah smart's teeth are... she plays jennifer and it's like, holy shit, i know there's conspiratorial types who think that fluoride is an agent to dumb us all down and turn us into subservient sheep with no free will, but like, holy shit england, USE SOME FUCKING FLUORIDE IN YE OLDE TOOTHPASTE, WOULD YE?!!?

and btw, for those of us on teh spoiler front, even knowing what we think we know, there's still a whole bunch of shit we have no idea about, or stuff we have glimmers of and no idea how it comes all together, so like, there's still reason to watch, as per moffat's philosophy he explained in a confidential a few episodes back.

Oh yeah, I'm a total mark. I wholly admit that. Doctor Who has me doing the equivalent of popping for Cena when that music hits =D

edit: did you write that whole analysis of episode 2 in the PM? I'm about to address that, but I'm wondering if you cheated and copied-n-pasted that.... be honest!

That was from an analysis where I found out aboot River.

I'm not nearly that intelligent.

Hey guys, a heads up in that BBC america has probably succumbed to the holiday weekend figuring that americans are going to be out en masse and they've pushed back tonight's episode til next week, which really sucks if you're watching it domestically cuz like, this week's episode left you with a little something to think about going forward into next weeks' belter-looking-episode.

thepiratebay(dot)org and do a search on doctor who... i've never gone for the ~1gb 720 versions, but the usual ones are 350mb and by now they should come down quickly. i also heartily recommend having peerblock going, for whilst it doesn't make you invisible it's not like it can hurt, you know?

let me know when you lot have seen it cuz i'd love to talk about it, but really, i'd be doing you some sort of a criminal injustice by going ahead and blabbing now. i've been fortunate enough to catch decent streams the last two weeks (even with 75k/sec "value" DSL) and was able to catch the episodes @ 12:45 proper, and then the confidentials right afterwards, so i'm call caught up but i'm guessing that you guys aren't as dedicated as me with it.

i mean, yeah. it makes sense cuz there was one glaring difference between series 5 and series 6 i kept noticing that made me go "hmmm" and then there's the spoiler and speculation lot which i did get into, and like, i think i'm going to re-swear to myself up and down that i'm going to stay pure for the 2nd run, especially with what i know going into next week. it seems that what i've heard is going to be true, but how true and for what ends is really going to be the situation... but hey, we'll find out. at least one cat is due to escape the bag and then we can finally get to what it all means.

oh btw in the last scene of today's episode karen gilland (the actress who plays amy pond) looks SO MOTHERFUCKING GOOD. holy shit, obviously she's a bonafide scottish dimepiece and all, but like, when you see her at the end her face is just so perfect.... word.

oh, and for those of you who have seen this week's episode and want a proper "next time" trailer for next week's episode, the beeb has it up @ http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/dw/videos/p00h7m4l --- it's not attached to the episode properly. there's also a 1.5 minute "prequel" that features a bunch of dialogue, but youtube doesn't like working for me since i've gone up to windows 7 so i haven't managed to see that... amazingly enough, the BBC player works but they've region-locked the prequel, and as far as i know the trailer is still region-free so check that out if you'd like.

oh and the 1.5 minute prequel is on youtube... just search on doctor who prequel. i know at least one guy with the account name doctorwhomedia has it.

Was listening to some guys on Radio Free Skaro... one's got the same condition I have. Watches it, neither pissed nor impressed. Takes several days digestion and a second viewing until he's figured out if he likes the episode or not.

There's so much that's inter-related between the storylines. What's the closest to this writing? Colin Baker's "Trial" season (no)? Tom Baker's E-space episodes? Tennant's every companion shows up with Big Guns (lol)?

Matt Smith is a lot of fun as a potentially dark character. A "2 doctors" episode with Sylvester might be fun. (It bothers me that Sylvester's best scenes were in the movie, and he doesn't survive that!)

I gotta say the bit with Amy talking about her friend the Doctor and his little blue box before the opening theme is really irritating. It's Doctor Who, there's no need for anything but the theme.

Good midseason finale.

River's identity is revealed.

Sucks that we have to wait until August for new episode.

Welp, the new crisis in the world of Doctor Who fans is what's going to happen with the series in 2012.

Last week it was announced that 14 new episodes were commissioned and that Matt Smith would be returning as the Doctor. All seemed to be well in the land of the Whovians... but then, the current BBC1 controller Danny Cohen (i think) was at some press conference / panel / something and people asked him about Doctor Who, and he said that 2012 will have "some" episodes and that there will be a proper full series in 2013 (which is of note because November 2013 = the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. In fact, the exact 50th anniversary date falls on a Saturday so call it a hunch that there will be an episode airing on that day)

Back in 2009 people feared that the "gap year" featuring 4 90minute specials was a paradigm shift to change Doctor Who from a proper series to more of an "event television" thing... but then the series came back with a proper 13 episode run in 2010, and this year features a proper 13 episode slate with this odd gap in the middle. Showrunner Steven Moffat, also at the helm of Sherlock, which is a BAFTA-winning big deal over there, said "hey, you'll never be more than a few months away from new Doctor Who!"

Many speculated that this gap would either be a device to move the show to a proper autumn-spring run, as opposed to the usual spring-autumn runs of the new series, or even worse, it'd be a device to get people used to episodes in 6-7 episode clumps and then make it more "event" television, or just a lesser amount of #s. suffice to say, good ol gallifreybase.com is blowing up with people speculating/bitching/moaning/YOU-PEOPLE-ARE-FREAKING-OUT-FOR-NO-REASONing about this.... is it going to be that the 14 episodes, presumably another 13 episode series with a christmas episode, are just going to start in the autumn of 2012 and go into 2013? are 6-7 episodes going to be 2012 and then 6-7 for all of 2013?

either way, some of the people in that place right now make me think of what people must have been saying when they were rounded up in railcars to go to workcamps back in the 1930s =D

It turns out that the actual episodes of the show might not be providing the most drama heading into 2012.... stay tuned, true believers!

So Speeps, I take it that you saw the trailer... so you caught River in the Madame Kevorian eyepatch deal standing in front of an egyptian sarcophagus... this makes me wonder if the long-rumored Mondasian Cybermen in the Pyramids thing is finally coming true, cuz check out the promo image the beeb has dropped for series 6b...

Image

anyways, you know how moffat loves to re-use his old fanfic/short-stories, such as continuity errors and what i did on my christmas vacation by sally sparrow (blink)???! someone mentioned this on gallifreybase in regards to the odd-n-goofy riversong/amy connection, but when i read about it i had to agree that i too wonder if moffat has read this story... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E2%80%94A ... s%E2%80%94

i really wanna read taht story but the official robert a heinlein archives wanna charge me $2 for it... this is why god invented dumps of books in .pdf format, eh? =D

ok, fuck regurgitating the doctor who thread i'll do this here... that last episode really pissed me off.

first of all, when the doctor showed up and the heroic music started playing and there were cuts to various people going SQUEEEEEEE all OMFG HE'S HERE it's like where's CM punk's living colour cult of personality entrance music playing?! for fuck's sake man, i've preached about http://beasthouse-lm2.blogspot.com --- dig through that and find when he talks about stephen moffat's fetishization of the doctor and it's so dead on with this episode. also, the sidebar to the right is worth the price of admission alone.

anyways, so that kills me. and yeah whatever decent episode, but when river shows up at the end.. that YESSSSS shit. the doctor going smooch smooch... man, that's when i seriously wanted to demolish my television. what the fuck is that shit?!!

see, once i had a spirited conversation with a queen's subject @ the bennigan's by the art institute (one of the 2 or 3 bennigan's left in existence as independent spots, right?) and we were talking about christopher eccleston versus david tennant.

i said hands down christopher eccleston is the man, it's not even close. throughout his series with rose it was repeatedly conveyed that he was vastly superior to her so while he did stick up for his ability to mack the shit out of rose when captain jack showed up with his invisible spaceship, still, he was letting jack know that he could get all up in that ex-popstar anytime he damn well pleased, but that motherfucker's a LORD OF TIME and you know ain't no party like a time lord party cuz a time lord party is not subject to the temporal laws that govern time and space and therefore it technically can never stop or even end for that matter. HE'S A MOTHERFUCKING LORD OF TIME AND THIS IS SOME LITTLE CHAV FROM LONDON!!! CASE CLOSED.

he tells me that christopher eccleston is a GAY because he didn't hit that, and tennant is hitting that that that's why he loves her so much.

seriously, if you find something gay about christopher eccleston's 9th doctor, i've just found something gay about you.

see like, tennant shows up and turns all emo in his "geek-chic" clothing and WAAAHHHH I CAN SAMPLE THE DARK MEAT BUT ALLS I WANT IS ROSE WAAAHHH BOOOOHOOO.

it's like, fuck you have some dignity you know?! the doctor always transcended relationships with his assistants/companions cuz he's the fucking man and they're just there. i mean seriously, even colin baker prolly only fucked peri brown out of spite and boredom, let's be real real foreal here.

so that whole thing changed with tennant/rose, and now we've got this convoluted-as-all-fuck river song bitch showing up and when i saw the smoochies it's like?!!? comeon. it was easy to go "nigga you gay" when he turned down karen gillan, but like, still, there was at least a vibe of "i'm above and beyond this shit" --- now this river song love of the life thing, yargh. i hear episode 13 is called "the wedding" --- it better go to 26/06/2010 as opposed to some super convoluted shit with doctor and a non-kingston river/melody... please don't do me like that moffat, YOU DON'T NEED YOUR OWN ROSE! JUST GIVE ME YOUR OWN THING.

and now i really want amy pond and rory to go away... and that's sad cuz like, i'm in the worst shape of my life and all but if karen gillan had nothing to do for the next 4 hours and wanted to hang out seriously the bitch would alternatively want to marry me and fix my life so i could be her fucking dream husband (it's been tried twice before and it's never worked) i swear to god, but like, for the good of the franchise... restore some honor and dignity to one of the greatest characters in the history of human television and please please please get rid of the fucking pond family and river and all that. seriously, give me some spunky slightly thick big-tittied chick from the future who doesn't have emotional baggage and some boyfriend so the doctor can give us sly winks that he nailed that shit like the nailgun in quake between episodes, kind of like eccleston indicated he COULD do, man...

so please, for the love of god... completely new companions next year, no pre-river-song "melody pond" shit with the black girl. please oh god no i dont want family drama and love stories on doctor who, i want brilliant shit with aliens and badass condescending pseudojargon dropped on the half-wits as the doctor and thusly timelords are a metaphor for illuminated motherfuckers who transcend that of the ordinary human being. i could relate to that...

matt smith's doctor has so much potential IMHO, cuz even tho he's using his 26yearoldedness nad looks to be this squeeeeee kissy kissy doctor, you get the idea that he could play the shit out of the character and easily be better than tennant, and prolly rank up in the top ~4-5 of all time behind baker eccleston and pertwee..... i mean, jesus. comeon.

anyways, my bad to do this rant here but like, i had to say it. it had to be done. end of line.

Chris Eccleston was the man. David Tenant's last line as the Doctor shit on any positive things he'd done.

"I don't want to go..." Fuck you. Man up.

Oddly, I could see Tom Baker's Dr saying the same thing.

Tennant's last episode was so over the top it wasn't funny. If you're looking for something comparable in the old series, closest is Peter Davison's last episode.

In any event, the new show doesn't exist in a vacuum, and so therefore the soap opera slop has to be there. I just turn on my ignore-o-vision. Nothing else for it.

lol... don't forget that tv commercial for.. .a computer company, where he was with romana 2 and the computer told him to marry her.

incidentally, tom baker did marry lalla ward. she was later quoted as saying the most scary monster she's ever seen on doctor who was tom baker =D

tom baker did end up transcending the program and wielding a shit-ton of power... peter davison was the beneficiary of that because he kept the companion harem alive when he wouldn't let them get rid of sarah sutton (nyssa) cuz i think they wanted to go forward with just fielding (tegan) but davison put his foot down and said AW HELL NAW. incidentally, i think he was all up in sutton at the time =D

eventually the swept all of that out and gave him a bonafide leela-style sex-kitten companion in peri brown, and honestly she's just about the only thing that can make a good deal of the colin baker era stomachable.

i get that the new show exists in a different television landscape, and since it's the BBC's #1 export worldwide they wanna keep a young virile doctor in the role to help sell action figures to 10 year old boys and they wanna captivate the 14 year old girl audience... and to a large extent they have to. once eccleston left they had tennant do his prettyboy thing and that ended up being so popular (there's a shit-ton of people who rank tennant as the GOAT alongside tom baker, but really, it's not even close. and now people rank matt smith real high cuz he's there and they want to love the show so much that they end up loving the show (go figure)

it's kind of sad cuz even tho he's young and marketable and lawrence miles had a throwaway line in 08/09 looking over bookmaker odds for the next doctor at the end of his piece he said "oh fuck it, you just might as well go and cast matt smith" out of frustration. ha. but i really think matt smith COULD play the shit out of the doctor and end up transcending all but baker, eccleston, and pertwee (in that order. pertwee is slept on, but man, you know he was sippin his wine and nailing all them bitches cuz he had that perfectly stated (not over or under) elegance and the pinky ring was a nice touch and yeah... that's why i was amazed when the kids were all OMFG YOU DRINK WINE?!?! its like #comeonson on twitter)

argh. we'll see. there was a screening of let's kill hitler (the episode that airs on teh 27th) in scotland and predictably people are LOVING IT and moffat did his appeal to the crowd to not go on the internet and spoil it, furthermore to spread disinformation regarding the episode... and in the spoiler-n-speculation thread on gallifreybase i'm ~8 pages into the thread after the screening and NOBODY has spilled the beans yet. wow.

see lawrence miles argues that the fact that moffat has to be an one man army against spoilers means he's using these gimmicks to cover up the lack of substantive storytelling, and i see that... i just don't want to be beat over the head with love interests and babies and stuff. doctor who always transcended the contempory-societal urge to force a love interest into everything, and like, now that it's succombing to it.

hell, during eccleston's reign rose tyler Herself once said "he's not my boyfriend mickey... he's much better.... much more important than that!"

i wish the show would remember that concept and continue on accordingly.

The redhead's lucky she's easy on the eyes because I'm really starting to hate her character. I hope Rory dumps her ass.

Her best work was in Series 5 after Rory died.

This season hasn't been good. But then it also hasn't been her.

Maybe the second half of the season will be better for Pond.

here's a baited question: who's your favorite companion in the 2005-onwards series and why?
